Novocaine – REVIEW

Following the success of ‘The Companion’, ‘Scream’ and the hit TV series ‘The Boys’, Jack Quaid’s career trajectory soars with his latest role in ‘Novocaine‘. This film offers a unique twist on the superhero genre, with Quaid playing Nathan Caine, a man devoid of pain sensations. Given his character’s condition, it’s fitting that he portrays an assistant bank manager who is already in the process of foreclosing businesses. Nathan is both likable and introverted, sticking to a rigid daily routine. This routine, however, serves a purpose as he has a biological disorder that prevents him from feeling pain. Consequently, he lives solely on liquids to avoid biting his tongue while chewing, and sets his watch alarm for three-hour intervals to remind himself to take bathroom breaks to prevent his bladder from bursting (we can only hope our Editor follows suit when he’s on a liquid lunch break at The Nag’s Head, as his dry cleaning bills are astronomical!).

However, while Nathan’s timid nature contrasted sharply with the flirtatious and blossoming relationship between him and Sherry, the new clerk, everything seemed perfect until disaster struck. Three robbers dressed as Santa Claus (a Christmas-themed twist) burst into the bank, stole the safe, and took Sherry hostage. In a desperate attempt to save her, Nathan embarked on a citywide chase, only to find his pain tolerance pushed to its limits. The ordeal was filled with intense moments of agony as he endured bone-crushing and flesh-piercing pain, often shown in graphic close-ups that were difficult to watch.

The main focus of this production is a thrilling, prolonged sequence that appears to defy death within a house filled with traps. Despite its humorous intentions, the film’s tone becomes uneven due to close-ups of intense pain or injuries, most notably during the grueling finger nail extraction scene. This creates a challenge as the film attempts to balance humor and violent action effectively. Nevertheless, Quaid delivers an engaging performance in the lead role, and there seems to be potential for a franchise, although the one-joke premise may lose its appeal rather quickly.
