As a fan, I’d confess that one area where Destiny 2 falls short is the experience for newcomers. Instead of being gently introduced, they’re plunged headfirst into the ongoing seasonal narrative with minimal guidance about their character or role, leaving them bewildered amidst the game’s intricate alien space opera. To add to the confusion, Destiny 2 is vast, boasting over a decade’s worth of lore and numerous activities to explore. Fortunately, the latest Edge of Fate DLC aims to streamline the onboarding process for novice players, making it less daunting than ever before. However, even with these improvements, getting the hang of this legendary game can still be a challenge.
Edge of Fate Introduces a New Saga of Destiny Story
In the course of Destiny 2 so far, we’ve reached the end of The Light and Dark saga, a narrative that culminated in the defeat of the Witness – an entity that embodied the Darkness and aimed to transform the universe into its ultimate form. However, the Witness was vanquished by the collective might of the Guardians and the power of light. Now, with this segment of Destiny’s story concluded, we’re moving on to the Fate saga, making Edge of Fate an ideal starting point for new players.
Although newcomers might lack a comprehensive understanding of the various factions, races, and characters due to their absence from previous storylines, the narrative has commenced anew, allowing both novice and experienced gamers to delve into fresh characters, locations, and conflicts. The initial New Light quest remains unchanged, serving as an introduction to recurring faces within the Tower and various missions; however, it’s the additional DLC content that fully immerses new players in the story, starting with this inaugural installment of the Fate saga. Moreover, alongside narrative adjustments, Bungie’s Destiny team has implemented structural modifications to the game, making it more user-friendly for those unfamiliar with its unique menu system.
The New And Improved Portal Serves All New Light Needs
For quite some time, the primary navigation system in game D2 was the Director, a solar system map that facilitated seamless transition between activities for players. Yet, this layout has been perplexing even for long-time players since the Red War, and it’s often hard to determine where your next activity is located. The new menu screen, named the Portal, simplifies this greatly.
Nowadays, you no longer need to struggle to find your next story mission location. Instead, there’s a single button that instantly transports you to your mission, eliminating the hassle of navigating from planet to planet in search of the quest marker. Furthermore, the Portal menu offers separate sections for quick, standalone missions that can be completed solo or with a team, placing players into a brief activity whenever they desire, lasting approximately ten minutes.
To some long-time gamers, the absence of the colorful Planets menu might seem disappointing, but the introduction of the simpler Portal menu could actually help newcomers navigate the complexities that lie ahead in Destiny 2. The game has many interconnected components; by combining the Director with the user-friendly Portal menu, novice players will effortlessly discover the activities they wish to engage in, and will always be aware of their next available option.
With The Meta Wiped, The Grind Begins Anew
One significant hurdle for novice gamers in D2 is that advancing to a competitive power level alongside veteran players involves a laborious process – even reaching the base power was tedious, and escalating further to soft and hard caps made it even more grueling. However, with Edge of Fate, everyone has been brought back to 10 power, placing both fresh and experienced Guardians at the same starting point in terms of power. To climb the ranks, players can opt for Portal activities or challenge themselves with the Edge of Fate campaign on Legend difficulty, which allows New Lights to reach maximum power swiftly or through persistent effort.
Apart from readjusting the power levels, Bungie has overhauled the ranks of weapons and armor as well. This means that previously coveted equipment has become less desirable due to the introduction of fresh stats and perks. This revamped grinding experience ensures that every player gets a fair shot at acquiring new, potent gear, significantly altering the game’s competitive landscape.
As a fresh enthusiast diving into Destiny 2, I must admit that its deep-rooted lore, spanning over a decade, can be quite intricate and challenging to navigate. It’s filled with complex interspecies politics and conflicts that even dedicated lore-keepers struggle to untangle at times. However, the arrival of the Edge of Fate expansion has brought about changes that make it easier for newcomers like me to find our footing in this vast game universe. While it’s not a completely smooth sail yet, these changes certainly provide a gentler introduction to the wild, rich world of Destiny 2.
