NVIDIA fully embraces the Steam Deck with a native GeForce Now app promised for 2025

Among the exciting revelations made by NVIDIA during their major CES 2025 event was the long-awaited confirmation of comprehensive and fantastic support for the Steam Deck through GeForce Now.

On the Steam Deck, accessing games from NVIDIA’s cloud was never unattainable due to its web-browser compatible version. Moreover, there’s been an informal Linux application available for some time now, which essentially encapsulates this web application. In simpler terms, you can play NVIDIA’s cloud games on the Steam Deck via a web browser and there’s also an app (not officially supported) that wraps this web app for easier use on Linux systems.

But now, in 2025, NVIDIA is promising a “native” app for the Steam Deck.

At the CES trade show today, it was announced that gamers can look forward to playing their Steam library games in high-quality with GeForce RTX, thanks to the upcoming launch of a native GeForce NOW app for the Steam Deck. NVIDIA aims to introduce cloud gaming to the widely used PC gaming handheld device later this year.

Previously, NVIDIA facilitated players in effortlessly setting up GeForce Now’s web version on the Deck using a convenient script. However, this new development surpasses that. By “native app,” we imply that they are presently developing a Linux adaptation of the client currently accessible on Windows and Mac. You would also expect a smooth operation as it will likely run directly from the gaming mode.

If you upgrade to the premium version of GeForce Now, it allows your Steam Deck to connect to an external monitor for gameplay at up to 4K resolution, high frame rates, with HDR and ray tracing capabilities. These features are not natively available on the Steam Deck. Moreover, popular games like Fortnite and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, which are incompatible with the Steam Deck due to anticheat restrictions, can be enjoyed through this service.

NVIDIA has yet to specify the exact release date for this application, only that it won’t be until late in 2025. However, it promises to be a valuable addition, and I eagerly anticipate its arrival.
