NVIDIA RTX GPUs can’t get past the Hell is Us demo intro without crashing — developer offers a temporary fix

At the moment, the team behind Hell, developed by Rogue Factor, appears to be experiencing some issues. They’ve recently launched a PC demo on Steam, but unfortunately, it seems to malfunction for users sporting an NVIDIA RTX 40 or 50 series graphics card.

A significant number of users who own newer RTX GPUs are encountering issues advancing past the initial cinematic introduction. This is far from desirable, particularly as the developers strive to create a positive and impactful first experience for players.

As a tech-savvy individual, I’m excited to share that Rogue Factor swiftly addressed an issue they encountered on June 3, and I’ve been keeping a close eye on developments since then. Though the investigation is ongoing, there are hints suggesting that NVIDIA drivers might be at the heart of this problem.

In the meantime, as the developers are working on a complete solution, they’ve offered an alternative method for you to play Hell is Us immediately if you wish to do so.

  • Lower your graphics settings before you get to the game’s main menu. Hell is Us has a pre-launch window that lets you adjust settings.
  • Deactivate super resolution, frame generation, and other special graphics settings. Rogue Factor shares a screenshot with DLSS, XeSS/Xe, and FSR settings all set to Off.

In simpler terms, after the initial movie-like introduction, you can boost your graphics settings to your preferred level without worrying about further crashes.

Exploring further into the chat forums about the game on Steam, several players mention that the game still crashes during the opening cinematic, even after trying the suggested fixes. It seems that a significant number of these players have an RTX 30-series graphics card, indicating that the issue might be more common than initially assumed.

One individual asserts that resolving the issue was achieved by running the game in a windowed mode, as recommended by the developers. The other user suggests that turning off the High Dynamic Range (HDR) feature fixed the problem for them.

To optimize your game performance, try reducing all graphics settings to their lowest possible level. Disable any extra visual effects that you can temporarily, such as shadows or anti-aliasing. Once you’ve passed the cinematic sequence, you can adjust the settings again using the in-game menu.

Hell Is Us operates on the Unreal Engine 5, an engine that has been known for unusual glitches and performance problems on personal computers ever since it was launched.

Moreover, it’s important to note that the game is quite demanding on PC specifications. The recommended system requirements listed on Steam suggest a GPU with a minimum of 11GB VRAM, and either an 11th Gen Intel Core i7 or AMD 7000-series Ryzen 5 CPU for optimal performance.

As a game analyst, although my focus hasn’t been intensely on the upcoming game slated for release on September 4, 2025, from the glimpses I’ve had, it appears to be nothing short of extraordinary.

In this game, you traverse a nation ravaged by conflict, now inhabited by demons, from a third-person viewpoint. It’s a mix of open-world exploration and close-combat action.

I intend to take a look at the demo as my computer exceeds the required specifications, yet I prefer to delay it until the developers have addressed and resolved that bothersome bug they’re currently working on.
