Oblivion Remaster Borrows Skyrim Features for “Best of Both Worlds”

Today, after much anticipation with leaks and hints, Bethesda finally unveiled the remastered version of “The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.” This updated version is now available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5, allowing gamers to either revisit the classic or experience its story for the first time with an improved visual presentation. However, this remaster isn’t just about better graphics. As many fans hoped, it will also modernize the UI and other aspects, while maintaining the original game’s timeless appeal – drawing a bit of inspiration from “Skyrim” in the process.

In the recent unveiling of the remastered version of the game “Oblivion,” there was a display of numerous side-by-side comparisons between the original and the updated version, highlighting the significant visual enhancements. The developers at Virtuous outlined their strategy for this remaster, focusing on making the game more compatible with contemporary gaming hardware. This essentially involved improving areas beyond just graphics to ensure smoother gameplay, while maintaining the authentic storyline of the original game. Although we’ll need to play it to fully assess the remaster’s performance, the initial sneak peek certainly appears promising. Many members of the Virtuous team expressed their affection for the original game, a sentiment that seems to have been carried over into the remastered version.

Apart from cosmetic improvements, the game undergoes an overhaul in user interface and user experience design, sound effects, and gameplay dynamics. A significant shift in gameplay is noticeable in the leveling system, which now has a touch reminiscent of the Elder Scrolls series, particularly for those who were introduced to it through Skyrim.

What the Oblivion Remaster Hopes to Borrow from Skyrim‘s Success

It’s not shocking that, given the enduring success of Skyrim, developers have shared plans to incorporate updates in combat and leveling systems inspired by later Elder Scrolls releases. As per the livestream, the remastered version of Oblivion is taking some significant cues from Skyrim, aiming to offer fans “the best of both worlds.” This mainly involves incorporating aspects from Skyrim’s combat system and level-up mechanics, while maintaining some original features from Oblivion.

In this new system, players find it simpler to progress through levels as they can customize particular attributes using virtue points. Unlike the straightforward skill tree from the game Skyrim, this feature offers a similar seamless and fulfilling experience when leveling up. Players just need to add points to enhance their attributes, which in turn boosts their desired skills. This represents a significant departure from the complex system of the original game, where abilities were divided into Major and Minor skills based on character class. By adopting a more balanced playfield like that found in Skyrim, where points can be applied to any skill from a shared pool, we hope it will be easier for players to advance their characters without needing extensive tutorials.

As a gamer diving into this updated adventure, not only am I leveling up with fresh adjustments, but the game also offers revamped character models to intensify the realistic combat experience. It’s reminiscent of my Skyrim days, yet with a contemporary twist that even the numerous re-releases couldn’t quite capture. Here, the combat animations and effects are elevated, much like in Skyrim, but with a more modern and immersive flair. The simultaneous images during the live stream only amplify the excitement!

To fully determine if this change offers the best of both worlds as claimed, players can jump straight into the remastered version of “Oblivion” starting today, April 22nd. You can find it on PC through Steam, on Xbox Series X|S and PS5, or even access it via Game Pass.
