Oblivion Remastered player spends 10,000 gold on a cocktail of spells and buffs, all to keep one troubled NPC alive through his murderous rampage

A player of the remastered version of Oblivion went all out with the game’s spellcasting, even bearing substantial personal consequences, all in an effort to rescue a particularly ruthless non-player character.

In the settlement of Skingrad, a Wood-Elf named Glarthir might approach you with a request for assistance. This quest is known as ‘Paranoia’. Glarthir suspects there’s a plot against him, believing that some of his townsfolk are secretly following him. The outcome of the quest can vary, but if you confirm his suspicions yet refuse to aid him in dealing with his adversaries, he will take action independently.

In Oblivion Remastered, it’s common for non-player characters (NPCs) who instigate fights in town squares to be swiftly dealt with by the guards. Typically, if Glarthir sets out to attack three of his fellow characters, he rarely survives for long. However, one player intervened in this situation.

At the culmination of the Paranoia mission, Reddit user Plane-Session-6624 opted to preserve Glarthir’s life. However, their attempt to equip him with some top-tier armor for the endgame was thwarted when they discovered that Oblivion Remastered doesn’t support reverse pickpocketing, which prevented Glarthir from benefiting from the additional defense.

The player appealed to the community, expressing that “I possess a Fortify 100 Strength and 100 Endurance spell for him, as well as a potent healing spell, but he’s not causing enough damage to the guards, and I can’t maintain my magic energy long enough to keep him healed during it. Do you have any suggestions?

On the next day, they came back with news: “I’ve developed a new form called Super Saiyan Glarthir. He’s swept through countless guards, eliminated every foe… and managed to escape unscathed?

According to Plane Session, the decisive factors in their victory were fortifying shields and increasing blunt damage. Their strategic combination of spells provided a robust 70% shield, a 100% Blunt Fortify, Endurance, Agility boost, and a powerful healing spell as an added bonus. To maintain these buffs continuously, they mention spending approximately 4,000 gold on sorcery potions. However, the total cost escalated significantly, reaching over 10,000 gold when considering the expense of crafting spells, magicka-enhancing items, and additional potions.

In a surprising turn of events, the outcome was remarkably successful. Swiftly, Glarthir handled his initial objective, eliminating the NPC without giving the guards a chance to respond. However, by the second skirmish, Glarthir’s actions had caught the attention of the authorities. With a little assistance from Plane Session, both the second target and the accompanying guards met their end, before Glarthir moved on to his third objective and dispatched them as well.

Thus far, everything is going well in the narrative, but it appears that Glarthir has become a bloodstained figure due to his actions as a mass murderer. The player decided to wait for four hours, observing how Skingrad’s guards would react upon catching up with this criminal. As dawn breaks, dead guards are found scattered across the streets. Most NPCs now seem reluctant to interact with Glarthir, except for a few remaining guards who meet their demise after encountering him near the bodies of those he killed. Eventually, these two guards fall, leaving Glarthir free to retreat to his home, where he seemingly evades further confrontation, having apparently gotten away with murder, thanks to an enigmatic magical ally.
