In the Chorrol Recommendation mission within the Mages Guild storyline in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, the protagonist is tasked with obtaining a book titled “Fingers of the Mountain” from Cloud Top, located northwest of Chorrol.
In this scenario, both Teekeeus, the leader of Chorrol’s Mages Guild, and Earana, a knowledgeable High Elf, are eager to obtain the Fingers of the Mountain and unveil its hidden secrets. The story’s ending will vary based on who ultimately lays their hands on the book.
Should You Give Fingers of the Mountain to Teekeeus or Earana in Oblivion Remastered
Regardless of who you choose to deliver the book to, either Teekeeus or Earana, the final result of your mission, known as the Chorrol Recommendation, remains mostly unchanged. In both cases, they’ll ask for the stolen book and, in return, offer similar rewards.
If You Give Fingers of the Mountain to Teekeeus
- Give the book to Teekeeus, and the Chorrol Recommendation quest will be marked complete. You will get a Recommendation Letter from Teekeeus and +2 Fame Points.
- Talk with Earana and tell her that you’ve given the book to Teekeeus. She will demand that you steal it back for her. This will start the quest Fingers of the Mountain, Part II.
- Steal the book back from Teekeeus by lockpicking his chambers on the third level of the Chorrol Mages Guild Hall (Mages Guild Living Quarters). It’s the room with a door on the right as soon as you enter.
- Give Fingers of the Mountain to Earana and she will tell you to come back after 24 hours in order to get the reward (details below).
You don’t have to wait for Earana to prompt you to take the book from Teekeeus. Instead, you can simply hand over the book to Teekeeus first and then secretly steal it back by pickpocketing him. Later, return to Earana, complete the quest, and move forward. Or alternatively, follow Earana to his chambers, find the book in his chest (since he doesn’t lock it), and grab it without needing to pick the lock.
You do not need to complete Fingers of the Mountain, Part II to get the Chorrol Recommendation.
If Teekeeus doesn’t find out that you took his book, he won’t accuse you during your next encounter, instead casually mentioning, “It’s odd that you ask about it, as it has vanished lately. By any chance, do you know something about that?” However, don’t worry, there will be no consequences to follow after this conversation.
If you prefer not to retrieve Fingers of the Mountain, simply say “No, thank you.” when Earana requests you to recover the book for her. Doing so will successfully conclude the mission.
If You Give Fingers of the Mountain to Earana
- Give the book directly to Earana, and you will gain +1 Fame Points and she will start the quest, “Fingers of the Mountain, Part II”.
- Talk to Teekeeus and he will ask you to steal the book from Earana.
- Steal the book back from Earana’s room in the Grey Mare and give it back to Teekeeus.
- He will now give you the Chorrol Recommendation.
No matter if you take the book from Earana or leave it, The Fingers of the Mountain, Part II mission will unfold in exactly the same manner.
Giving the book to Teekeeus or Earana differs in the number of Fame Points you receive. If you initially give it to Teekeeus, you’ll earn +2 Fame Points, but if you opt for Earana, you’ll get +1 Fame Point. However, providing the book to Teekeeus first will also grant you a Chorrol Recommendation, as long as Teekeeus eventually obtains the book.
Fingers of the Mountain, Part II Guide

Once you hand over the book to Earana, wait for 24 hours before approaching her again. You can find her either outside the Mages Guild Hall or in the Grey Mare Inn. Upon speaking with her, she will compensate you by providing “Earana’s Notes,” which contain instructions on how to create a unique Shock spell called “Fingers of the Mountain.
To get this spell, you will need two things:
- Any Shock Spell
- A Welkynd Stone
Make your way back to Cloud Top, seek out the damaged marble column standing beside the scorched body where you previously discovered the book. Perform a Shock spell on that column (you may employ a Scroll). Upon casting the lightning spell, expect to be hit by an electric shock, causing severe harm. This side effect can be countered by various Spell Absorption abilities (such as the Spelldrinker Amulet or the Atronach Birthsign) or by using armor and weapons with defensive enchantments.
If you manage to make it through, a message pops up saying, “I was struck by lightning, and I’ve been given a potent new magic – the Fingers of the Mountain spell.” To learn more about this spell, navigate to the Magic section and look under the Target tab.
Is Fingers of the Mountain Worth Using?

Title Spell: Fingers of the Mountain is an inefficiently designed, costly custom spell with a high magic energy requirement. Once players reach the stage of being Apprentices in the Mages Guild or upgrade Frostcrag Spire to its Altar of Spellcrafting, they can create more efficient personal spells. For now, though, Fingers of the Mountain acts as a powerful long-range lightning spell that is obtained gratis.
