Oblivion Remastered’s First Update Is Here – But Is It Causing More Problems?

For three days now, “The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered” has been captivating players anew or reintroducing them to Cyrodiil. The game’s nostalgic appeal is evident, even with remnants of its original quirks such as the Kvatch quest’s occasional bugs. However, some gamers are keeping a watchful eye for patch notes due to performance issues and cloud save concerns. Despite Bethesda and Virtuos yet to officially announce any updates, it seems “Oblivion Remastered” has already received its first post-release update.

On April 25th, numerous gamers discovered an update for “Oblivion Remastered” upon logging in today. The update is approximately 1.9 GB, but may differ slightly based on whether you’re using a PC or console for downloading it. Unfortunately, there are no detailed patch notes available for the April 25th update of “Oblivion Remastered” on Steam, Bethesda’s official website, or any other accessible platform. However, a comment on Reddit, allegedly from a representative at Bethesda, offers some insight into the reasons behind this update.

Regarding the ongoing discussion about the latest update among players, @BethesdaGameStudios_ on Reddit recently posted that this is a hotfix. Given their long history of sharing patch notes and Bethesda game updates on Reddit, we believe they are a trusted source of accurate information.

As suggested by a Bethesda Community Manager, today’s update appears to have primarily concentrated on making some adjustments behind the scenes, which typically wouldn’t impact gameplay directly. This could explain why no patch notes were released, if the modifications were relatively small and mainly concerned with backend operations. Nevertheless, it seems that this update has triggered some problems for players.

Issues with Today’s Oblivion Remastered Update

Based on player reports after installing the update, it appears that today’s hotfix has caused some problems with the game. A significant concern, as mentioned in Bethesda’s post, is that the upscaling and resolution settings are not functioning properly. This issue seems to be particularly affecting players who obtained the game through Game Pass on PC, or in other words, via the Microsoft store. Without a detailed explanation of the patch notes, it’s challenging to pinpoint the exact purpose of the hotfix.

It’s been observed that following the update, some PC players have experienced a drop in frames per second (fps), whereas Xbox console users notice improved performance. However, this doesn’t seem to apply to those running the Xbox Game Pass version of Oblivion Remastered on their PCs. Interestingly, Steam players don’t appear to be encountering the same problems, possibly due to the absence of a hotfix installation option via Steam. As for PS5 gamers, they haven’t received this hotfix yet, suggesting that the issue might be particular to Xbox consoles at this point.

In other words, if you often tweak graphics settings or experience FPS drops, it might be wise to hold off on updating ‘Oblivion Remastered’ until a new patch becomes available. Since we’re approaching the weekend, this update might not come until the following week.
