Obsidian’s classic Baldur’s Gate successor ‘Pillars of Eternity’ is getting a surprise turn-based mode later this year, alongside other updates

Obsidian Entertainment recently shared significant updates regarding the original Pillars of Eternity. Firstly, they’ve released a new update for the game that focuses on fixing general bugs and enhancing various aspects such as combat, visual presentation, quests, dialogue, user interface, and many other features. For comprehensive details about this update, you can check out the patch notes posted on the official game forum section of their website.

The second, significant revelation is that Obsidian plans to incorporate a fresh turn-based battle system into Pillars of Eternity by the end of this year. At present, there isn’t a specific launch date for this feature, but Obsidian Entertainment has promised to share further information at a later time.

Currently, Obsidian Entertainment has shared a brief gameplay clip on their social platforms to offer fans a glimpse into how the turn-based combat will appear when the final development is complete. You can view this sneak peek in the video provided below.

If you haven’t played it before, Pillars of Eternity typically employs a ‘strategy gameplay with temporary pause’ combat system. In this setup, you control your heroes in real-time, but can occasionally pause the action to issue direct commands to them and strategize your next steps.

The proposed new combat system aims to create a gameplay experience similar to Baldur’s Gate 3 and Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, where characters – whether they are part of your team or opponents – act in turns according to an initiative order. During their turn, each character moves into position and engages in combat.

We are living a renaissance of turn-based combat in RPGs and I love it!

Over recent years, there has been a resurgence in the popularity of turn-based computer role-playing games (CRPGs), with games such as Baldur’s Gate 3 and Wasteland 3 leading the way. This revival has given rise to contemporary hits like Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader and anticipation for future PC releases like Shadow of the Road.

It wasn’t necessary for Obsidian Entertainment to reintroduce a turn-based mode in the original Pillars of Eternity, given their current focus on The Outer Worlds 2 and upcoming project, Avowed. However, I’m truly delighted that they decided to do so.

I’ve consistently enjoyed games with turn-based combat in the RPG genre, and since Pillars of Eternity is introducing a turn-based mode, it might be what draws me into giving the game a shot.

It’s possible that Obsidian Entertainment is testing out the turn-based mode as a trial run to determine if it could pave the way for a tactical game based on Pillars of Eternity. Regardless, I’m eagerly anticipating the arrival of the turn-based combat mode in Pillars of Eternity later this year, which promises to be one of the finest PC games ever developed by Obsidian Entertainment.
