The creative team behind the underestimated “Odd Taxi,” Baku Kinoshita and Kadzuya Komoto, who serve as director and screenwriter respectively, are gearing up for their next anime venture. This upcoming project appears to be even more intense emotionally compared to their previous collaboration. Similar to “Odd Taxi,” the new film titled “The Last Blossom” is another original concept anime, but without the anthropomorphic animal characters. The initial teaser trailer, poster, and cast for “The Last Blossom” have been unveiled as reported by “Anime News Network.” We aren’t sure we’re prepared for the emotional ride Kinoshita and Komoto are planning to take us on.
Previously, it was made known that Studio CLAP (known for “The Tunnel to Summer,” “the Exit of Goodbyes”) will be responsible for animating the upcoming movie. Michinoku Toge is set to oversee the film’s concept art and design aspects. As for “The Last Blossom”, it is scheduled to hit screens this Fall, after having its global premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France back in June.
The Last Goodbye‘s Teaser Is Already Emotional
The Last Farewell”
Story Overview: This movie centers around an old convict named Akutsu who recalls his past through dialogues with a talking flower. Though the premise may seem peculiar, the trailer hints at a profoundly emotional and contemplative film. In the snippet shown, we see Akutsu isolated in his tiny cell, his red-bloomed companion beside him. As he lies on his bed, he says, “I’ll try to change things…” To which the flower responds, “Don’t joke about it.” The 30-second clip also provides glimpses into Akutsu’s peaceful life with Nana in 1986, as they stroll together through a picturesque garden.
In this animated series, Kaoru Kobayashi and Junki Tozuka will take turns playing the role of Akutsu at different points in his life. On the other hand, Hikari Mitsushima and Yoshiko Miyazaki will voice Nana Nagata, Akutsu’s partner, during past and present timelines respectively. Lastly, Pierre Taki lends his voice to the character of the talking Housenka flower.
The first advertising artwork for “The Last Blossom” has been unveiled as well! Similar to the trailer, this poster features a minimalist design. The lone red blossom is positioned in an antique tomato can, nestled within the darkness, with the faint light streaming through Akutsu’s cell window bars. Take a look at it below…
The Last Blossom Releases This Fall
At this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival, running from June 8th to 14th, “The Last Blossom” will have its first appearance on the global stage. This debut is significant as it marks exactly one year since its initial announcement at last year’s Annecy festival. This time around, “The Last Goodbye” will be competing in the Feature Film Competition category. We are looking forward to its release in the fall, although the specific date remains undisclosed for now.
In the autumn of 2023, an elderly convict named Akutsu, serving a life sentence and facing a solitary death in his solitary cell, is confronted by a talking Housenka flower. The flower laments, “What a dismal life you’ve led.” This sets off a series of reflections for Akutsu as he recalls his past. It was during the summer of 1986 that he resided with Nana and her son Kensuke in a modest apartment adorned with Housenka flowers in its garden. The narrative unfolds as a tale of a single triumphant night for a yakuza on the brink of death, and the story of his family, told by a flower that blooms within prison walls.
