Ofcom fines GB News £100,000 for ‘serious and repeated’ breaches to impartiality rules

As a seasoned cinephile who has witnessed the evolution of television news over the decades, I find myself deeply intrigued by this latest development between Ofcom and GB News. Having lived through various eras of journalistic integrity (or lack thereof), I can’t help but feel a sense of déjà vu as I read about the fine imposed on GB News for alleged bias in their programming.

After an initial probe revealed that the show “People’s Forum: The Prime Minister” on GB News did not provide a sufficient variety of important perspectives and failed to give them adequate consideration, telecommunications regulator Ofcom has levied a penalty of £100,000 against the network.

On February 12, 2024, the discussed program ran for an hour, during which the prime minister at that time, Rishi Sunak, addressed questions from the audience.

In simpler terms, Ofcom stated that the show provided him with a nearly undisputed opportunity to advocate for his government’s policies and actions during an election period, which contradicts the rules about maintaining impartiality as outlined in their guidelines.

Reflecting on the gravity and recurring nature of this infraction, I find myself compelled to acknowledge that Ofcom has levied a fine of £100,000 against GB News Limited.

Additionally, we’ve instructed GB News to air a declaration of our conclusions about them, at a time and in a manner that we decide.

GB News has previously contested Ofcom’s initial penalty ruling through a judicial review, which Ofcom is currently standing by. Ofcom has indicated that they won’t impose the suggested penalty (a fine and an on-air announcement) until the judicial review process is over.

In response to Ofcom’s decision to penalize GB News regarding The People’s Forum, CEO Angelos Frangopoulos expressed that this move constitutes a blatant assault on free speech and journalism within the United Kingdom. He firmly believes these penalties are unjustified, unfair, and potentially illegal.

The High Court has allowed GB News to file a legal appeal, aiming to overturn Ofcom’s ruling that their program violated impartiality standards.

The proposed penalty against GB News by Ofcom remains open to a potential legal dispute. This planned sanction contradicts Ofcom’s obligation to uphold fairness, legality, and proportionality in their actions, especially when it comes to preserving free speech, particularly political discourse, and issues of public importance.

From the outset, we considered the People’s Forum a crucial element of broadcasting for the public good. We firmly believed that necessary measures were implemented to uphold impartiality and adhere to the Broadcasting Code. This platform was created to enable members of the general public to pose their own questions directly to prominent political figures.

GB News acknowledges the need for regulation, recognizing our responsibilities according to the Code. At the same time, it’s important to remember that Ofcom, too, is legally bound to protect free speech and enforce its regulations in a fair and just manner.

On the Peoples’ Channel, we remain steadfast in bravely advocating for freedom – for our audience, for our listeners, and for every citizen of the UK. Given recent events, it’s clear that this commitment is more vital now than ever before.

On previous occasions, Ofcom has determined that GB News violated their regulations, and earlier this year, they issued a warning to the broadcaster following numerous instances where politicians were observed serving as news anchors on the channel.
