OG Xbox Game Returns 21 Years Later With New Reboot

A classic game initially released for PC in 2004 and later ported to Xbox in 2006, will make a comeback this year on multiple platforms. Interestingly, when it first debuted, this game was not available on the original Xbox; instead, it was exclusive to PC for its first two years. Despite being released on other platforms afterward, it is still considered an exclusive title for the original Xbox due to never appearing on any other console at that time.

2004 marked a highly competitive era for video games, with heavyweights like GTA San Andreas, Half-Life 2, Halo 2, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, World of Warcraft, Monster Hunter, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, and numerous other outstanding titles being unveiled. Given the exceptional caliber of games launched in that year, many future classics were somewhat overshadowed due to the abundance of quality releases, which may have garnered more attention in a less crowded year.

One example is the game Painkiller, originally developed by People Can Fly in 2004, which was their inaugural release. This studio later became well-known for games like Bulletstorm (2011), Gears of War: Judgment (2013), and Outriders (2021). Now, 21 years after its initial release, the first-person shooter is making a comeback with a fresh reboot, scheduled for release this year.

This autumn, a new version titled “Reimaging” will hit PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. However, unlike the original game, this one is being developed by Anshar Studios instead of its original creators.

In this new release, you find yourself in a state between Heaven and Hell, paying for your sins against divinity. Yet, hope is given by the Voice of the Creator, offering redemption as a Champion. Your task is to thwart Azazel, the fallen angel, from releasing his horde of demons onto Earth. You’ll encounter countless foes, each with distinct abilities, and face the three fearsome offspring of Azazel – the Nephilim. Will you triumph in your mission and secure your salvation?

Currently, we don’t have any information about the cost of this upcoming reboot, nor do we know if it will be offered as part of a subscription service at its initial release.
