Okami Sequel – Capcom Shares Message from Director Hideki Kamiya

As a long-time fan of the captivating world of Amaterasu and the enchanting gameplay of Okami, hearing the news that a sequel is finally underway fills me with an indescribable joy! After what felt like a never-ending wait, it’s almost surreal to see Hideki Kamiya returning to the helm, bringing his vision for this beloved franchise to life once more.

For nearly twenty years, fans have frequently requested a follow-up to the game Okami. Over time, it seemed less and less likely that this sequel would become reality. However, at The Game Awards last week, Capcom stunned attendees by announcing that they were commencing work on Okami 2, and even more excitingly, the original game’s director, Hideki Kamiya, will be back to oversee the project.

Alongside their announcement on Twitter, Capcom has also posted a message from Kamiya personally. This esteemed game creator responsible for Okami, Devil May Cry, and Bayonetta (who left PlatinumGames in 2023) has expressed his enthusiasm about rejoining Capcom. In this new role, he will be heading up the studio Clovers, where he’ll oversee the development of a sequel to Okami.

Kamiya’s message says, “I never thought the day would actually arrive when I could go back to Okami and carry on the tale with my own hands.” At this moment, I am overwhelmed with a mix of apprehensive wonder, as if it might still be a dream, and an indescribable joy.

To everyone who tirelessly contributed to bringing this project to life, friends who stood by me and convened at Clovers, and above all, the unwavering supporters of Okami who have stayed with us through the years: it is your collective efforts that have culminated in this extraordinary achievement. I am profoundly thankful for each and every one of you.

Just as a budding sunflower unfurls its petals under the morning light, so too does our project begin to take shape. Yet, it remains a tender sprout, ready to bloom with vibrant colors. We are eager to transform this new ‘Okami’ into a beautiful garden teeming with life, and strive to make good on our promise of a brighter tomorrow.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Capcom has announced on their official site that the sequel for the captivating game, Okami, will be getting some external development assistance from none other than M-Two, who masterfully crafted the 2020 remake of Resident Evil 3. Additionally, they’ll have support from Machine Head Works as well! Can’t wait to see what these talented studios bring to the table for this highly anticipated sequel.

On their website, the company indicates that they don’t have immediate updates regarding the Okami sequel; instead, they mention that there will be a wait before more information is shared. During The Game Awards, it was made clear that the game has just started being developed, implying that it is still several years away from release.

It’s worth noting that, alongside Okami and Onimusha (both of which were mentioned at The Game Awards), Capcom is also considering rejuvenating other previously inactive series. For further details, check it out here.
