Okami Sequel Dev Wants to Prioritise Creativity, Keep Investors at Arm’s Length

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I’ve seen countless sequels and reboots that either missed the mark or failed to live up to the original. However, the announcement of an Okami sequel has me genuinely excited, not just because I’m a fan of the series, but because it seems like we might be getting something special this time around.

At this year’s Game Awards, one of the most shocking revelations was the unveiling of a sequel to the beloved game Okami.

At present, details regarding the project being developed at Hideki Kamiya’s freshly independent studio, Clovers, are scarce. All we have so far is a teaser trailer that was released during its official unveiling.

Discussing with Denfaminicogamer via Automaton, Kamiya shares some insights into the studio’s current and future game development strategies.

Specifically, he emphasizes the significance of preserving self-rule and limiting external impact, to foster a conducive environment for producing distinct and innovative games, as Kamiya explains.

For this purpose, investors will provide funds for each project individually, implying that they’ll support the financing of separate games instead of funding the entire studio as a whole.

Kamiya clarifies the scale of his project with Clovers, aiming for a team size of approximately 70 individuals. He expresses his disinterest in developing the massive games commonly known as AAA titles.

Absolutely, those types of games hold significance, but I prefer ones that reflect the uniqueness of their creators. In terms of creating myself, I find it enjoyable to craft such unique games. (Kamiya)

It appears that the strategy involves maintaining a more limited scope while keeping things well-defined and minimizing interference from outside influences. We’re on board with that approach.

It seems that the follow-up to the Okami series might not show up right away, but there’s certainly a lot of anticipation surrounding its return – a feeling shared by Kamiya himself, who finds it difficult to express just how much pleasure he derives from collaborating with Capcom on this intellectual property once more.

Are you looking forward to seeing what Clovers cooks up? Discuss in the comments section below.
