As Hideki Kamiya is busy developing the anticipated sequel to the action/adventure game Okami at studio Clovers, he has shared that the team will not solely focus on creating sequels for older games. In an interview with GameSpark (translation by VGC), Kamiya and fellow team member Kento Koyama discussed their projects at Clovers.
As stated by Koyama, Cover’s approach doesn’t rule out any opportunities in game development. After they complete work on Okami 2, their subsequent project may very well be a brand-new intellectual property.
Essentially, Koyama stated that our strategy for developing engaging games doesn’t restrict us to specific methods.
In response to the suggestion of creating a game based on an established intellectual property (IP), Kamiya expressed that if it seemed intriguing for us to put our unique ‘Clover’ touch on it, we would definitely take on the project.
If a project proposal sparks our interest and enthusiasm, we’ll definitely create something unique. Therefore, we remain open to various opportunities. Ultimately, it boils down to whether the project leaves us with a ‘wow’ impression.
Wrapping up the discussion, Kamiya conceded that certain enthusiasts of Clover Studios’ early-2000s classic games may feel let down due to fewer titles from that era making a comeback.
Currently, we’re focusing on a single project, coincidentally one I was previously involved with. This might give the impression that it’s a continuation or extension of that past work, but rest assured, this is just our initial endeavor. While it’s great that people are looking forward to it based on those expectations, I want to emphasize that this project represents only one facet of our capabilities and potential future works.
Established in 2004, Clover Studio initially collaborated with Capcom on several highly-rated games before closing in 2007. During this brief period, they produced popular titles like the Viewtiful Joe series, the action game God Hand, and the legendary Okami, which were released across various platforms such as the PS2 and Nintendo DS.
Previously this month, Kamiya showed enthusiasm about potentially revisiting the abandoned project known as Scalebound at some point in the future. This title was initially intended to be a flagship game for the Xbox One, however, its development eventually came to a halt.
As a game enthusiast, I couldn’t help but notice the buzz around Kamiya’s workspace lately. He was sharing a video on social media, beaming with excitement as he watched an old trailer for Scalebound. Down memory lane, he was fondly recalling the development process of this game that never saw the light of day. Yet, even after all these years, his heart swells with pride when he thinks about it.
In a concluding manner, the Clovers team referred back to Kamiya’s statement, expressing his wish: “He expressed hope that he could create it once more in the future.
At The Game Awards 2024, a follow-up to the game Okami was announced. This endeavor is spearheaded by Kamiya and is under the care of a fresh studio named Clovers for its creation.
