Every week, updates are made to Old School RuneScape, and in the most recent one just a few days ago, a brand new endgame boss was introduced. Players are currently working on perfecting the entire fight and discovering all effective strategies for defeating it. In this guide, we’ll cover the essentials of the boss, based on what the community has learned from killing it hundreds of times already.
In this rephrased version, I used more natural and conversational language to make the text easier to read and understand. I also changed “somehow” to “already” to make the sentence clearer and more concise. Additionally, I replaced “basics” with “essentials” to give a more accurate description of the information that will be covered in the guide.
Old School RuneScape – Ultimate Yama Guide (Mechanics, Items, Bosses)
You’ll encounter a fresh demon boss named Yama within the “Chasm of Fire,” a location nestled in the kingdom of Kourend on Zeah. Before engaging this formidable foe, ensure that you’ve completed the quest titled “A Kingdom Divided” (if it hasn’t been done already).
This boss has been created for optimal performance by a team of two, although it can technically be tackled solo. However, it’s significantly more powerful compared to the previous pair they introduced, making it less efficient to handle alone, particularly without near-perfect execution of mechanics, a skill that only a small fraction of players possess.
As a gamer who’s relatively new or has progressed to the middle stages, if you’re considering taking on Yama in combat, it would be wise to invest more time in training first. Most seasoned players suggest building up your base combat stats to around 90 before attempting such fights.
Additionally, there exist drops that resemble the awakener orbs from Desert Treasure 2 bosses, which can be obtained casually. When you utilize these items, your odds of acquiring a specific drop improve significantly, although their exact functionality remains unclear since they are not functional at this point in time.
Yama Gear and Mechanics
Before entering, be aware that the equipment suggested by many experienced players for farming him can cost anywhere from hundreds of millions to several billions of gold. While it’s possible to do it with lower-tier items, your success will largely depend on your skill level in the game.
In most cases, you should carry equipment suitable for magic or melee combat with you. If you’ve finished the “While Guthix Sleeps” quest, I recommend acquiring an Emberlight (if possible) for this particular battle. An Arclight could also work, but it will perform much less effectively compared to the Emberlight.
It’s also suggested that focusing primarily on melee combat could make the gameplay a bit more challenging. If you’re new or prefer a less intense experience, consider using your best magic setup instead. However, carry a smaller melee weapon as a backup just in case.
If you find yourself in a situation where you can’t use the “shadow,” a purifying team would be the best choice for you. Since you should finish “While Guthix Sleeps” regardless, it might as well be done now. Make sure to prepare runes for Mark of Darkness and Dark Demonbane as well.
A Tumeken’s Shadow would prove beneficial in this situation, however, it comes with a hefty price tag of over a billion gold, unless you manage to acquire it from a raid. With a mage character setup, the finest armor you can obtain will either be the Virtus set or the Ancestral Robe set.
According to those in charge of the official wiki, alternatives like Barrows or Blue Moon can be useful if you’re working with a limited budget. If funds are extremely tight, elite void might also be an option. The listings for typical endgame mage accessories, including the occult necklace and tormented bracelet, can be found there as well.
For provisions, pack high-quality food items, beverages (if preferred), healing elixirs such as “super restores” or sanfew serums, and either anti-poison solutions or immunity items. Additionally, consider bringing a powerful battle potion. If desired, you may also bring supplies to summon thralls along with you.
Keep in mind that because our boss is relatively new and players are currently conducting extensive testing and brainstorming about it, you can expect the Old School RuneScape community – renowned for discovering intricate yet efficient strategies – to uncover some innovative tactics over time, possibly even new techniques by top-tier players.
As a devoted fan, I’ve noticed an ongoing debate about which style reigns supreme: melee or magic. Even high-tier content creators are employing clever techniques to engage in combat without taking a hit. In a few more weeks, the meta for Yama should be solidified, and we can all enjoy the clarity that comes with knowing which approach is most effective!
Yama Mechanics – Phase 1
When engaging Yama in combat, remember he employs various fighting techniques. To minimize the heavy damage he inflicts, it’s generally best to keep a distance from melee range if you’re not using a melee-centric setup.
Shield him from both projectiles (missiles) and spells (magic), as it depends on the type of assault he’s facing: flames indicate magical attacks, whereas the emergence of shadows around you signals ranged ones.
Initially, variously-hued symbols or protective markings will adorn the entire room. Activating these symbols can shield you from receiving excessive damage during specific assaults, though it’s important to note that using one will render it inactive for a brief period following your interaction with it.
In the thrilling world of Yama’s battles, I always find myself on high alert during his special moves. When he builds up either red or purple energy, it’s essential for me or my teammate to swiftly step onto a corresponding glyph on the battlefield. If we manage to do this correctly, the glyph acts as our shield, safeguarding us from the impact of his powerful attack. It’s a dance of colors and quick reflexes that keeps the excitement level high!
As you engage in this battle, it’s crucial to keep moving since unexpected attacks could come from anywhere in the arena. Be on the lookout for small waves of fire that circulate around the boss region, and leap over the lines of shadow energy stretching across by sprinting through them at the right moments.
In addition, he possesses the ability to invoke ‘explosive barriers’ within the battlefield. It’s crucial to eliminate them before their corresponding yellow gauges are fully charged. To do this efficiently, employ ‘demon-dispelling weapons’. Neglecting to disarm these quickly can result in substantial damage to you or even restoring the health of the opponent.
Yama Mechanics – Phase 2
When the boss attains a specific level of health, he’ll transport you and your teammate to a location beyond the arena. Your task will be to skim stones across the water until you reach the opposite side. During this journey, it’s crucial that you dodge the fireballs being hurled in your direction.
Ultimately, you’ll encounter a formidable foe known as the Judge of Yama. This adversary boasts a substantial health pool and can retaliate against your attacks with prayers. To tackle this challenge effectively, you’ll want to alternate between melee and magical abilities, and it appears that their health is shared among both players.
After the judge passes away, both combatants will find themselves instantly returned to the central battlefield. This marks the commencement of the second round, during which Yama will unleash a fresh array of tactics alongside his existing ones.
When he pounds the ground and mutters something in his own tongue, carefully observe the hue of the energy emitted from his footstep. If it’s orange, proceed towards an orange symbol. Should it be violet, make your way to a violet symbol instead.
Even though the attack is fatal if it hits just one player, both of you have the chance to dodge harm by stepping on a symbol. For clarity, work together and designate one member to be responsible for activating these protective symbols.
Yama Mechanics – Phase 3
Once you attain a specific level of wellness, you’ll be transported again to the outlying regions. As before, you must overcome a Judge of Yama to return to the primary battlefield. Please repeat your previous success in this endeavor.
Upon my comeback, Yama unleashes a fury reminiscent of a boss fight. To put it simply, I must evade a series of three fiery orbs that descend in intricate patterns overhead, followed by surges of dark energy upon their landing. It’s quite a spectacle, one that’s best experienced rather than described!
1. If the pattern aligns with you horizontally, make sure to shift at least one tile in a vertical direction. Conversely, if it lines up vertically, move one tile horizontally. And, when the pattern is diagonal, remember to move diagonally as well to dodge the impact from the waves.
2. In case the pattern lies parallel to you horizontally, adjust at least one tile by moving it vertically. On the other hand, if the pattern runs straight up and down, make a horizontal adjustment by moving one tile. Lastly, when the pattern is diagonal, ensure you move diagonally too to avoid getting hit by the waves.
3. If the pattern lines up with you horizontally across, make sure to slide at least one tile up or down. In contrast, if it’s stacked vertically, shift one tile sideways. And, when the pattern zigzags diagonally, remember to move along that diagonal path to escape the waves.
During the battle, you’ll need to navigate shadowy blazes flowing across the arena continually. Keep yourself prepared to leap over them until we reach the finish. Meanwhile, keep in mind that shadowy eruptions, which we call void flares, will still materialize, so ensure both you and your partner are on standby to shatter them promptly when they appear.
Continue attacking him persistently, ensuring you dodge his complex maneuvers as much as possible. Strive to avoid any accidental mistakes or overlooking his intricate tactics that could lead to an instant defeat.
Yama Item Drops
Yama is primarily cultivated for the Oathplate armor set, a fresh collection of armor that enhances your strength while also providing a slight bonus for slashing attacks. While it might not be the strongest in raw power, it’s an excellent choice when wielding slash weapons and seeking extra protection, as its defense is greater than that offered by Bandos gear.
As an enthusiast, I’m eagerly waiting to discover the drop rates for this character’s exclusive equipment. Over the coming weeks, I recommend keeping a close eye on the official wiki for any updates regarding these elusive details. Here’s a sneak peek at what unique items could potentially drop:
- Forgotten lockbox – Can contain varying rewards ranging from gold, dragon items, or even an oathplate set piece.
- Oathplate shards – These are base resources needed for crafting the required items for smithing oathplate armor set pieces.
- Dossier (Yama) – When you use this, you will receive either a teleport scroll for the boss, a rite of vile transference that changes a death charge spell, or one of the many contracts that are currently unusable and whose effects are unknown at the moment.
- Oathplate helm
- Oathplate chest
- Oathplate legs
- Soulflame horn
- Yami – This is the Yama pet and will likely have an absurdly low drop rate, though it is currently unknown.
Beyond these unique items, Yama has the ability to distribute a range of supplies, which may include runes, inexpensive rune armor, potions, food, fundamental crafting materials, and other assorted items. The drops are also said to be influenced by the level of contribution, similar to the past collection of bosses they’ve introduced.
Here’s what we currently understand about Yama: Further exploration and testing by Old School RuneScape enthusiasts are ongoing to discover the most effective strategies for defeating this boss. In a week or two, top players might have highly optimized methods to clear it quickly. For now, give it a try when you feel confident enough.
