As a seasoned analyst with over two decades of observing and dissecting the gaming industry, I must say that the Steam Replay data for 2024 has been both intriguing and enlightening. Having witnessed the evolution of gaming since the days of floppy disks and CRT monitors, it’s fascinating to see how some titles have stood the test of time.

View Urgent ForecastAccording to Steam Replay’s annual review, it appears that Steam gamers tend to favor older games. In fact, games released as far back as eight years ago accounted for a significant 37% of the total gaming time on Steam in 2024. Furthermore, titles that were between one and seven years old took up nearly half of all playtime (47%). On the other hand, only 15% of the playing time was spent on games released in 2024.
Initially, it might seem like recently launched games aren’t performing well, but this assumption is probably incorrect. In fact, the percentage of gaming time dedicated to games released in 2024 is higher compared to those from 2023. Last year, only 9% of the total gaming time on Steam was spent playing games that were newly launched in 2023. Going back even further to 2022, a higher percentage of playtime, at 17%, was dedicated to games released that year.
In essence, it appears that numerous PC games retain their appeal over extended periods, frequently dominating the scene. Our PC Gamer team has observed that live service games frequently lead on Steamcharts. Currently, Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, and PUBG BATTLEGROUNDS are the top three in terms of active players. It seems unlikely that this podium will shift soon. Additionally, older games such as GTA V maintain strong positions within the top ten, leaving few openings for new games to claim the top spots on these charts.
