The upcoming comedy film, “The Roses,” has set its UK premiere for Monday, 1st September 2025. So, get ready to enjoy Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch sharing the screen together soon!
The duo portrays the ideal couple, living by the California coastline, seemingly blessed with everything one could desire. However, their seemingly perfect life takes an unexpected turn.
The seemingly idyllic couple Theo (Cumberbatch) and Ivy (Colman), with their thriving careers, wonderful children, and a passionate relationship, appear to have it all. However, beneath this polished image of perfection lies a powder keg of rivalry and grudges that erupts when Theo’s professional aspirations meet an unfortunate end.
The upcoming movie features Cumberbatch and Colman as its main actors, while an equally illustrious ensemble includes Ncuti Gatwa, Andy Samberg, Allison Janney, Jamie Demetriou, Zoë Chao, Belinda Bromilow, and Kate McKinnon.
The Roses” is a modern take on the 1989 comedy “The War of the Roses,” directed by Danny DeVito and starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. In the original film, the relationship between the characters deteriorates, leading to a harsh, contentious divorce dispute centered around their accumulated belongings.
In a twist, the story “The Roses” will follow Ivy’s career ascension instead of Theo’s, culminating in Theo losing his position.
In one picture, there’s a heartwarming snapshot of Theo and Ivy in an affectionate moment, while another captures Ivy at her workplace, which seems to be a café. These images were first shared through Vanity Fair, with Cumberbatch explaining to them: “The movie is a tale that symbolizes two individuals who deeply loved each other, but eventually developed intense hatred towards one another, and missed the opportunity for understanding in between.
Surprisingly, a lot of it feels familiar: the challenges we face in expressing love to those we hold dearest, and the speed at which things can unravel if we neglect to cultivate and sustain the bonds that tie our family together.
Discussing the shift in storyline between The Roses and the 1989 movie, screenwriter Tony McNamara commented: “Nowadays, many couples realize the challenge of maintaining a balance between two careers within a marriage, which can be quite a puzzle to solve.
How will these two highly creative and ambitious individuals manage to maintain their marriage while keeping the passion alive?
Last year when the movie was announced, Matthew Greenfield, president of Searchlight, stated that “The Roses” is an outrageously funny tale, larger than life, yet remarkably human. With Jay directing, and Benedict, Olivia, and Tony involved, we have an exceptional team bringing this story to fruition.
BBC’s Benedict Cumberbatch, alongside Leah Clarke and Adam Ackland, are also involved in the production of the upcoming movie.
