As a devoted fan, I find myself utterly heartbroken by the news of Olivia Hussey Eisley’s passing. Her captivating performance as Juliet in “Romeo and Juliet” was more than just a movie to me; it was a timeless tale of love, passion, and tragedy that transcended the silver screen and touched countless hearts.
Hollywood is mourning one of their own.
Olivia Hussey Eisley, star of the 1968 film Romeo and Juliet, has died. She was 73.
On Olivia Hussey Eisley’s Instagram, it was shared with deep sorrow that she passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones on December 27th. Her life was filled with remarkable qualities – a warm spirit, wise insights, and pure kindness that left an indelible impact on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
The message went on, “Olivia led a life brimming with enthusiasm, affection, and devotion to the arts, spirituality, and animal welfare. Olivia is survived by her family, including her children Alex, Max, and India; her husband of 35 years, David Glen Eisley; and grandson Greyson; and a lasting legacy of love that will forever dwell in our hearts.
Olivia was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1951 to an Argentine father who was a tango singer named Andrés Osuna and a British mother named Joy Hussey. She spent much of her childhood in England, her mom’s homeland. As a teenager, she started her acting career, first on stage plays, before making her television debut on the show “Drama 61-67”.
When she was fifteen, she got her major debut by portraying Juliet in Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 film version of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. This movie bagged two Oscars, and both Olivia and Leonard Whiting were honored with Golden Globes for their outstanding leading performances.
In the year 2022, she along with another British actor initiated a lawsuit against Paramount Studios, the production company, claiming they were filmed in an explicit manner for the movie without their consent while underage. However, in 2023, a judge in Los Angeles dismissed the case, stating that their portrayal didn’t fall under the category of child pornography and that the lawsuit was filed past the due date, according to NBC News reports.
Apart from her role in the play “Romeo and Juliet”, Olivia is famously recognized for her part in the 1974 holiday slasher film titled “Black Christmas”. She also portrayed Mary in the 1977 miniseries “Jesus of Nazareth” and appeared in the films “Death on the Nile” (1979) and the miniseries “It” (1990), which was adapted from Stephen King’s bestselling novel. In 1997, Olivia made a guest appearance on “Boy Meets World”, portraying Topanga’s Aunt Prudence.
During the ’90s and 2000s, Olivia took on numerous voice acting roles in shows like “Batman Beyond” and “Star Wars: The Old Republic”. Her final role was in the 2015 movie, “Social Suicide”, which is loosely based on “Romeo and Juliet”. In this film, she and Leonard played the parents of a character played by her real-life daughter, India.
Later on, they met up once more at the 2018 TCL Classic Film Festival. After hearing about Olivia’s passing, Leonard composed a heartfelt message for his deceased co-star.
On Lynn Whiting’s Instagram post about Olivia, it was written: “We’ve had a lot of shared moments since we were little kids, hanging onto each other for dear life as every photo of us shows. You, Olivia, have always been brave enough to take on any challenge to make things right in the world.
The message continued, “Rest now my beautiful Juliet no injustices can hurt you now. And the world will remember your beauty inside and out forever. Leonard.”

Back in 2018, I was ecstatically thrilled when fate brought me face-to-face once more with my cherished costar at the TCL Classic Film Festival.
