They’ve recently had their second child, who is their first girl, delivered by a surrogate, several months following the former Newsroom star disclosing her fight against breast cancer.
On Instagram, posted on September 22, 2024, Olivia (age 44) and John (age 42) announced the birth of their child, whom they named Méi June Mulaney, born on September 14, 2024, which is said to be the year of the dragon.
The comedian and actress posted a picture showing the proud mother cradling their newborn while seated on her spouse’s lap in a hospital bed, as well as images of them all and their son, Malcolm Hiep Mulaney (who is 2 years old), at an oceanfront spot, gazing out to the sea.
Two months after their wedding, Olivia and John publicly announced the birth of Méi. This news came six months after Méi revealed she had undergone treatment for breast cancer. Her treatment involved several surgeries including a double mastectomy, hysterectomy to remove her uterus and fallopian tubes, as well as an oophorectomy to take out her ovaries. As a result of these procedures, Méi is now infertile.
Later on, she shared that prior to the last two treatments, she and John had undergone In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and produced two robust embryos. In an interview with Vogue in May, she mentioned that having a baby through surrogacy was no longer a daunting prospect for her.
In her Instagram announcement about the birth of their daughter, Olivia expressed deep feelings about not being able to give birth herself. When she initially encountered their gestational surrogate, they connected as mothers. The surrogate demonstrated tremendous compassion and wisdom, leading Olivia to believe she had found a true heaven-sent angel.
The actress went on to say, “I can’t put into words how thankful I am for her safeguarding our child for nine months and making our dreams reality.
In a simple and readable manner, the phrase “Méi,” which is pronounced as “May,” signifies “plum” in Chinese. Olivia, who has Chinese ancestry, expressed in her post, “I am so proud of my little plum, my little dragon for embarking on this journey to be with us. My heart is bursting with joy.
John, who’s been in a partnership with Olivia since 2021, shared his emotions regarding his upcoming role as a dad to a daughter, all while poking fun at the perks that usually come with having a newborn, like freebies for parents.
“We stole so much stuff from the hospital,” he wrote in his post, which also included a video of baby Méi spitting up milk onto her dad’s shoulder while being burped. “I love my little girl so much.”
