Olivia Munn’s Heartfelt Surrogacy Journey Amidst Cancer Struggles

Olivia Munn found a silver lining in one of her life’s biggest disappointments. 

Following the actress who played X-Men character giving birth to her son Malcolm at age 3 with husband John Mulaney in 2021, she felt strongly about carrying her second child Mei, aged 6 months. However, her breast cancer diagnosis in 2023 prevented this dream from coming true.

As I shared with Self magazine in an Instagram post on April 10, I understood that this decision might jeopardize my life, but I felt compelled to explore a hormone medication to carry my second child while managing my cancer. However, I must admit that those drugs were overwhelmingly debilitating. I found myself confined to bed most of the time.

In her own words, describing her daily existence while on the medication, “I managed to engage effectively with others for roughly two hours, and I was able to enjoy playing with my son during that time.

So, the 44-year-old knew she had to make a change. 

Olivia shared that she had no other choice but to undergo an oophorectomy, a surgery that involves removing the ovaries, and in her case, she also opted for the removal of her uterus and fallopian tubes. After being diagnosed with cancer, she said, “You essentially live in constant vigilance and fear, wondering where else the cancer might resurface.

Although Olivia understood that surrogacy was her sole means for having a second child with John, she struggled to accept this choice. But all her reservations vanished when they encountered their surrogate, leading them to welcome their daughter, Méi, in September 2024.

What struck me most during our surrogacy experience was the unexpected disappearance of my sorrow over not being able to carry my daughter myself,” Olivia explained. “Once all my hopes and aspirations were transferred to this other woman, I found myself immersed in gratitude instead of dwelling on fear, sadness, or worry.

To be clear, the previous Daily Show correspondent highlighted that the surrogate for the couple was an exceptional individual. He further stated that the entire process was “incredibly beautiful” in a heartfelt manner.

Earlier, John shared that the challenges and eventual happiness of bringing their daughter into their family strengthened his bond with his spouse.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d rephrase that statement as follows: “Recently, I found myself in an exhilarating and delightful predicament. Reflecting on the past few years, I can honestly say we’ve shared countless laughter-filled moments amidst challenges. While I don’t want to come off as overly sentimental or excessively sweet, I must admit that our bond has been incredibly strong, and we’ve managed to have a fantastic time together, no matter what.

On September 22, 2024, Olivia Munn and John Mulaney publicly announced the birth of their second child, a daughter named Méi June Mulaney, who had been born a week earlier through a surrogate.
