Established herself as one of the intriguing female directors since her directorial debut in 2019 with the praised film Booksmart. Her second project, released in 2022 as Don’t Worry Darling, was mired in controversy and received negative reviews from critics, but it still resonated with audiences and proved to be a commercial triumph.
With multiple director roles in upcoming projects, Wilde has a fresh venture: the romantic comedy film titled The Invite. According to reports, this new movie draws inspiration from the Spanish film Sentimental. In addition, The Invite will bring Wilde together with Seth Rogen again, following their collaboration on The Studio, and it will feature Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton as well.
In 2020, the film titled “The People Upstairs,” originally known as “Sentimental,” was launched. Cesc Gay directed it, and the cast included Javier Cámara, Griselda Siciliani, Belén Cuesta, and Alberto San Juan. The movie garnered numerous nominations, among them five Goya Awards. It was an adaptation of Gay’s stage play “Los Vecinos de Arriba (The Neighbors Upstairs),” and has already been remade in various languages.
This Spanish comedy has received an exceptional Rotten Tomatoes rating of 100% from critics, along with positive feedback from viewers too, maintaining an impressive 84% score on the Popcornmeter. The film titled Sentimental tells a story about a couple who have been together for fifteen years, and in an attempt to add excitement, they invite a younger, more vibrant pair for a gathering. This unexpected encounter leads to some unforeseen occurrences.
Title “The Invite” is officially described as a story about a couple who extend an invitation to their neighbors, leading to an enigmatic night filled with unforeseen surprises, the exposure of long-hidden feelings, and explorations into uncharted realms of sexuality. Filming has already commenced in Los Angeles, California.
Ben Browning, in partnership with FilmNation Entertainment, Megan Ellison via Annapurna Pictures, and David Permut, is the producer. Patrick Chu serves as an executive producer, while both FilmNation Entertainment and Annapurna Pictures share the financing responsibilities for this project.
