Olly Rix Reveals Why He Joined Casualty After Call the Midwife!

A fresh face is stepping into the role of clinical lead at the Holby City Emergency Department as Casualty kicks off its latest collection this weekend. Fans of Call the Midwife are sure to appreciate the addition.

Previously this year, there was an announcement that Olly Rix was set to join the medical drama’s cast, portraying the intriguing yet complex character Flynn Byron. At long last, audiences will have a chance to encounter him on screen!

Previously, Rix appeared on our television screens as Matthew Aylward, departing from Poplar towards New York in the midst of financial struggles. Although Call the Midwife is also a medical series, Rix’s new character will have a more active and engaged role.

He shared that he had an in-depth conversation over lunch with the executive producer, discussing the character extensively.

In our conversation that lasted approximately three hours, I found her absolutely captivating, and I wholeheartedly admired her perspective on the character’s role in the series.

Given the trajectory of the series, it felt contemporary, significant, thrilling, and something I couldn’t wait to become a part of.

In simpler terms, the character Flynn, portrayed by Rix, is depicted as a determined individual with a clear mission and strong will to bring about change. This determination stems from his recent military service, which Rix thoroughly investigated before shooting the series.

Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that when you initially encounter Flynn, he’s nearly ready for his own tour. I made an effort to respect the information I was given and the kind gestures they extended to me, and essentially incorporated those elements into his character.

When viewers first meet Flynn, “he is very tightly wound and he really is a sort of coiled spring”, but as the series continues, Rix believes viewers will get a closer look at Flynn’s relationship “with past demons or mistakes and whether or not he wants to to recognise his blind spots and make a change”.

Rix explained further: “Indeed, it’s quite a transformative path from the beginning stages. We intentionally made [him] appear quite substantial, emphasizing his weight, to provide him with a unique internal rhythm and physical presence distinct from other characters in the world he is soon to inhabit.

In simpler terms, “The environment he’ll soon enter is primarily civilian, initially not familiar to him. However, as the series progresses, we witness a softening of this world for him. We see his vulnerability, his humor, his playful side, and his imperfections. Essentially, we watch him adapt to these aspects all at once.
