As a former gymnast myself, I can’t help but be in awe of the stunning and intricately designed Olympic uniforms created for Team USA by GK Elite. Having spent countless hours practicing and perfecting my craft, I deeply appreciate the attention to detail and creativity that goes into each leotard.

Aly Raisman has been fighting a private health battle.

The former gymnast, having participated in two Olympics, disclosed experiencing two recent episodes of symptoms akin to strokes, requiring hospitalization.

The 30-year-old expressed on the July 17 episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast that she couldn’t recall her name. She added that her speech was slurred, and she had difficulty moving her body, causing her to undergo stroke tests twice in terror.

Raisman found it distressing to be under the care of doctors due to her past experiences. She is among numerous gymnasts who were victims of sexual abuse perpetrated by former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University doctor Larry Nassar. In 2018, he was convicted and sentenced to serve between 40 to 175 years in prison for the heinous crimes, which he disguised as medical treatment.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I experienced my initial medical crisis with symptoms akin to a stroke. Sadly, this meant that my mother was unable to join me in the ambulance on the way to the hospital for support.

The former gymnast, having participated in two Olympic Games, disclosed experiencing two instances of symptoms akin to strokes in recent years.

The 30-year-old woman on the July 17 episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast admitted, “I forgot my name. My speech was slurred and I could barely utter words. Two times I underwent stroke tests due to extreme difficulty moving my body. It was a terrifying experience.”

Raisman found the experience of being attended by doctors emotionally challenging. She is among numerous gymnasts who were victims of sexual abuse inflicted by Larry Nassar, the former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University doctor, who was sentenced to 40-175 years in prison in 2018 for committing these heinous acts disguised as medical treatment.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I experienced my initial medical crisis with symptoms akin to a stroke. Unfortunately, this meant that my mother wasn’t permitted to accompany me in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.

I find myself in a puzzling predicament as people ask for my name, but my memory fails me. I’m unable to recall or articulate the answer. Simultaneously, I’m conscious enough to recognize my vulnerability, thinking to myself, “Oh dear, there are two men here who could potentially overpower me if they chose to do so.”

The athlete went on, “I found it extremely difficult to cope with PTSD. Many people underestimate the long-term impact of traumatic experiences.”

The second time Raisman was hospitalized with similar symptoms was in 2023.

She remembered how they refused to let her go due to her inability to sit unassisted. Her condition required assistance for walking and using the restroom. The contrast between being an active athlete capable of pushing myself to the limit and being completely unable to move any part of my body was overwhelming. I experienced full-body paralysis.

According to Raisman, the pressure takes a toll on her body, so she is taking steps to improve her psychological well-being. “I need to stay committed to my treatment plan,” she explained, “and at the same time, my therapist needs to be responsive if I’m showing signs of distress.”

Though Raisman no longer competes in gymnastics, she has an essential role at the 2024 Paris Olympics this month – she serves as a hospitality ambassador for the games. She expressed apprehension about her Olympic comeback.

The athlete warned, “I may encounter situations or people that could bring up painful memories from my past.”

Raisman expressed her eagerness to witness the Olympics, particularly the gymnastics events. She shared, “It’s incredibly moving to see everyone,” and acknowledged, “I’m aware of the immense effort each person puts in.”

Though she’s content with being an onlooker this time, she shared that she’s been having dreams about competing. Upon waking up, she expresses relief and gratitude, exclaiming, “I’m so thankful I no longer have to compete!”
