As a former athlete who has experienced the highs and lows of competing at the Olympic level, I can’t help but be captivated by these images of athletes from around the world preparing for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Each one of them embodies a unique story of determination, perseverance, and passion for their sport.
We’re giving this gender reveal a perfect 10.
2024 Summer Olympics in Paris on July 29 brought a shock of joy to Team USA swimmer Ryan Murphy, as he clinched bronze in the 100m backstroke. His wife, Bridget Konttinen Murphy, who was pregnant at the time, then shared an extraordinarily exciting piece of news about their first child together.
After Ryan’s race came to an end, Bridget held up a sign that read, “Ryan it’s a girl!”
In a post on X, previously known as Twitter, Olympic swimmer Rowdy Gaines expressed, “[I’m] thrilled for Murphy! This achievement is far greater than any medal.”
Ryan is making an extraordinary attempt: he’s striving to be the first man to earn medals in the 100m and 200m backstrokes at three successive Olympics (London 2012, Rio 2016, and Tokyo 2020). At 29 years old, he shared that having Bridget with him has been a significant boost.
In his interview with Olympics.com in June, he stated that when one examines swimming matters in such minute detail and strives for perfection, it can often lead to self-criticism, causing one to scrutinize their personal traits and habits as well.
Seven-time medal winner expressed that having Bridget brings excellent balance to his life.
I’ve come to appreciate the way she gently reminds me, “Ryan, you don’t have to push yourself so harshly right now, give yourself some slack instead.” Her words bring calmness to my chaotic thoughts. She’s an invaluable presence in my life, keeping me grounded and balanced.
The couple first began dating in 2016 before tying the knot on Sep. 30, 2023.
And of course, Bridget is incredibly proud of her Olympian.
She expressed on Instagram on June 21st, “The Third Olympics are guaranteed for him now,” after Ryan made the cut for Team USA. I’m left in awe by this man. To reach this level of achievement over a span of twelve years is almost unfathomable – the mental and physical fortitude required is beyond my comprehension.
She commented, “He manages to make it seem effortless, yet behind the scenes it requires countless hours of work, an unwavering mindset under pressure, and a strategic intellect that frankly leaves me awestruck sometimes. I’m truly grateful to stand beside you through all this. I can’t help but be in awe of you.”
