One of Borderlands 4’s New Vault Hunters Was “Development Hell” to Get Right

In their latest video blog for the upcoming “Borderlands 4,” titled “Beyond the Borderlands,” the development team has been meticulously working on Vex, the game’s playable Siren character. Throughout the series, Sirens are renowned for possessing the flashiest and coolest abilities, with each new Siren introducing variations to keep things interesting. So far, Vex is proving no different, as the team has had a challenging time ensuring all her game features are perfectly balanced.

In “Beyond the Borderlands #4,” Max Davenport, the associate art director, described Vex as follows: “Vex is… she embodies our gothic female character. She represents our most enigmatic interpretation of the playable siren archetype thus far.

As a gamer, I found myself immersed in the intricate design of Vex’s gameplay, crafted meticulously to embody her character essence. This meant she had to exude an intimidating, dark, and brooding aura while still maintaining clear and dynamic action skills that could shine in any situation. The developers pushed the engine to its limits with prototype versions of Vex, ensuring her abilities would not only stand out but also seamlessly blend with the vast array of loot content and diverse scenarios the game had to offer.

This year on the publisher 2K’s website, Vex, sporting ominous wings and a menacing gaze, was unveiled alongside other playable characters known as vault hunters.

Growing up was tough for Vex, with her Siren abilities adding to the challenge. This difficult background shaped her into a person who often appears cynical and sarcastic, as she’s had to fight for survival and everything she owns.

As Vex’s character evolved, so did the complexity of her design. As new concepts were realized, the development team found it challenging to add numerous minor details to her character without compromising her fittingness within the game.

It was quite a struggle to bring everything together smoothly, but oh boy, the end result is nothing short of breathtaking! I’m thrilled that we managed to pull it off as intended because it feels like the perfect blend for my artistic abilities – it’s almost as if I gave it the ‘chef’s kiss’. I believe it’s an excellent representation of my skills, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.

It seems that the effort the team invested has paid off, given the excitement among fans who believe Vex might outshine the other vault hunters at the event.

“Vexlands 4 at this point,” wrote YouTube commenter CherryTheLad underneath the Vex design video.

Just last week, I found myself slipping into the shoes of “Purple Friday,” a character with quite the humorous backstory. You see, she’s a disgruntled retail worker who, fed up with pushy customers, harnesses her powers for lethal purposes. In a game trailer dropped on the same day, we got a glimpse of Vex summoning spectral versions of herself and phase-shifting familiars to bolster our combat efforts. What’s more, she’s an ideal outlet for elemental damage, making her a versatile choice in battles.

Fans of “Borderlands” can look forward to the official release of the new game on September 12th, but in the meantime, they’re kept entertained with numerous highlight videos, making the wait a bit more bearable.
