One of Elden Ring Nightreign’s biggest problems is (hopefully) getting fixed in a new update patch next week, but I’m not sure the changes will be enough

The long-awaited co-operative roguelike spinoff from FromSoftware, Elden Ring Nightreign, has officially arrived, and it seems that, as expected, this release isn’t as smooth as their games usually are at launch. Critics have generally given positive reviews (albeit less enthusiastic than usual for FromSoftware), but even with over 2 million players in its first day, the initial fan response to the game has been quite diverse.

As a tech-savvy gamer, I’ve been voicing my concerns about Nightreign, particularly regarding the limited map and enemy variety, the missing two-player duos option, and the lack of crossplay. Additionally, the balancing for solo play in Nightreign has been a point of contention among players. While it remains uncertain if the initial issues will be resolved, FromSoftware has announced that they are working on enhancing the solo experience with an upcoming patch next week.

Dear Nightfarers, we appreciate your gameplay in Elden Ring: Nightreign. In the upcoming week, Patch 1.02 will be unveiled, offering bug corrections and enhancements for solo journeys within the game. More specifics about this update will be shared next week. Stay tuned!

In simpler terms, during an Expedition’s night battles against bosses, such as those at the end of Day 1, Day 2, and the final Nightlord battle, developers are planning to provide you with one automatic resurrection if you should fall. Moreover, when playing solo, you will receive more experience (runes) from defeated enemies and bosses compared to players in a team setting.

These two modifications seem ideal for single-player experiences, as they respectively prevent total loss when you’re defeated once and balance out the speed difference between a lone player and a full team traversing a map. Alongside the solo scaling in the game that lessens enemy and boss health, these updates should ideally make conquering the Night on your own much more satisfying.

Although it’s been suggested, I’m not entirely convinced these adjustments will suffice on their own. We had hoped for an extension in the time allowed to explore the map before nightfall, such as lengthening the day phase, since solo play takes much longer to clear out individual points of interest compared to playing with allies.

Additionally, I believe it’s fair for single-player gamers to have access to more healing flasks. In cooperative play, the limit is seven with boosts from churches, but since the core Elden Ring gameplay allows up to 14, it seems reasonable to have at least 10 available. This doesn’t seem unreasonable to me at all.

After the release of Patch 1.02, which is scheduled for next week, the community will have a chance to test the revised solo experience. Based on our observations so far, I anticipate it might still seem hasty and challenging to advance substantially, but there’s always a possibility I could be mistaken.

In Elden Ring, FromSoftware listened extensively to player feedback and made several improvements after its launch, unlike their previous series such as the Dark Souls trilogy. So, if you find solo play in Nightreign lacking, there’s a good chance more tweaks will be made.

In a fresh and innovative departure from FromSoftware, Elden Ring: Nightreign offers an exhilarating spin-off experience by blending the Soulsborne combat style of the original game with roguelike elements and cooperative gameplay. Despite some significant challenges such as limited map variety and relatively unimpressive enemy types, it’s poised to be one of the standout Xbox games and PC games of the year for action-hungry Souls fans.
