As a seasoned gamer of manga and anime, I can confidently say that the return of Norihiro Yagi to Shueisha is like a long-lost friend coming home. With his previous works, Angel Densetsu and Claymore, still etched in my memory, I eagerly await the release of “Mukuro to Kishi”.
One of Shueisha’s renowned creators is joining forces with the publisher again, set to release a one-shot manga story on Shonen Jump+ soon. This year, Shueisha’s landscape has undergone significant transformations as Weekly Shonen Jump magazine is wrapping up several popular franchises in preparation for 2025. As a result, the weekly magazine is undergoing such extensive changes that it will also affect other major releases from Shueisha, along with their magazines and schedules, which are all expected to experience turbulence next year as well. Fortunately, each magazine is prepared to welcome fresh faces and narratives.
Shueisha is collaborating with some past creators, including Norihiro Yagi, who is known for his works like “Claymore” and “Angel Densetsu”. It’s been revealed that Yagi will create a brand new one-shot manga story, titled “Mukuro to Kishi”, which is set to debut on the Jump+ app updates in Japan on December 7th. As of now, there hasn’t been an announcement regarding an English language release.
What Is Claymore?
Norihiro Yagi previously collaborated with Shueisha on two significant series. The initial one was “Angel Densetsu,” which dates back to the late 1990s and early 2000s. In this story, a boy who is exceptionally kind is often mistaken for a delinquent due to his intimidating appearance. Despite having no combat experience or inclination, his menacing looks repeatedly land him in trouble throughout the series. Eventually, these predicaments lead him to save the school as a whole from various criminals and bullies.
In 2001, following close behind, Claymore made its debut. It was published in Shueisha’s Monthly Shonen Jump magazine, alongside Angel Densetsu, and remains Yagi’s longest and most impactful series. Fans recall this series for its portrayal of a race of super soldiers called “Claymores,” tasked with protecting humanity from dangerous monsters. This dark fantasy adventure delved deeply into various aspects of life and sorrow experienced by the main characters. Now, Yagi is set to return to Shueisha with a one-shot story, which could potentially lead to a full serialization in the future.
Will This One-Shot Succeed?
Currently, there’s no information available at the time of this post regarding the appearance or plot of “Mukuro to Kishi”. However, based on its placement within Jump+, it may lean toward a darker storyline suitable for an older audience, similar to series like Claymore. This darker style has been successful in popular titles such as Dandadan, Kaiju No. 8, and Chainsaw Man Part 2, which are also found on Shonen Jump. In fact, stories like Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, and now Kagurabachi have all moved Shueisha’s narratives towards a more ominous tone in various ways.
This demonstrates how preferences are evolving, and it could be an ideal fit for Norhigo Yagi. Having completed a highly successful serialization with Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday for Ariadne in the Blue Sky, which ended its run last year, Yagi is now well-equipped to handle the requirements of a weekly series, even though fans haven’t seen his work with Shueisha since the early 2000s. If this one-shot resonates strongly, it could potentially transform into a full series in the not-too-distant future.
