As someone who vividly remembers the golden age of gaming, the late 90s, I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia when I hear about Quake II being made free by Bethesda. Back then, I would spend countless hours huddled over my old CRT TV, battling Strogg soldiers in this iconic first-person shooter. The fact that this game, which has been a part of my gaming history for over two decades, is now available for free is just mind-blowing!
A classic Bethesda game is now available to download and keep for free. However, those interested only have until January 8. The free game in question hails from 1997, a legendary year in gaming history. In 1997 the likes of Grand Theft Auto, Final Fantasy 7, GoldenEye 007, Gran Turismo, Fallout. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Diablo, Star Fox 64, Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, Tomb Raider II, Dungeon Keeper, The Curse of Monkey Island, Colony Wars, Tekken 3, Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee, and much more released.
1997 saw the launch of one of the all-time great first-person shooters – Quake II, developed by id Software and Activision. On December 9, towards the end of that year, this highly acclaimed video game hit the market. Since then, the rights to the game have been acquired by Bethesda, who now hold the intellectual property. Interestingly, they’ve made the game available for free.
As an Amazon Prime subscriber, I’m thrilled to share that the game is now available for free through my Prime Gaming benefits! However, it’s important to note that this offer is primarily for PC users via GOG. Console gamers might find the free codes a bit scarce. But here’s some good news: once you’ve claimed the game, you can keep it even if your Amazon Prime subscription lapses. Enjoy the game, fellow Prime members!
Instead of the original Quake II released in 1997, what’s now available for free isn’t the standard version, but rather an advanced or improved edition that was published by Nightdive Studios last year, in 2023.
Experience the genuine, unadulterated Quake II in stunning 4K and widescreen resolution! This updated edition boasts improved graphics with enhanced models, smoother enemy animations and gore effects, a revamped AI for a challenging opponent, restored cinematics, dynamic lighting, anti-aliasing, depth of field, and the original hard-hitting soundtrack from Sonic Mayhem. And there’s more to discover!
The game’s summary goes like this: “Humans are engaged in a battle with the Strogg, an aggressive alien species that invaded Earth. In retaliation, humans launched an attack on the Strogg homeworld, but it was unsuccessful. However, you managed to survive. With fewer resources and less firepower, make your way through heavily fortified military bases and disable the enemy’s war machinery. The outcome of humanity will only be revealed after this.
As a fellow gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but share my excitement about this fantastic opportunity! If you opt to seize this offer and dive into Quake II, now freely available for download on PC via Prime Gaming, be prepared for an engaging single-player experience that typically lasts around eight to ten hours. Please note that this estimate doesn’t include the multiplayer aspect, which adds another layer of fun to the game. Enjoy the ride!
