One of the Best-Ever Movie Remakes Just Hit HBO Max

At the beginning of June, HBO Max (soon to be Max once more) expanded its streaming collection significantly, offering subscribers numerous fresh movie choices. Among the popular films added to its selection were “The Hunger Games”, “Hellboy”, and “Fight Club”. However, so many excellent new movies joined the HBO Max lineup that one exceptional addition might have been overlooked.

Among Max’s recent acquisitions is the sci-fi/horror timeless piece, “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” directed by Philip Kaufman. This 1978 blockbuster, headlined by Donald Sutherland, narrates an extraterrestrial invasion scenario where enigmatic entities start mimicking San Francisco’s human inhabitants. Over time, “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” has become renowned as one of the finest genre movies available; however, numerous enthusiasts are unaware that this film is essentially a remake.

The 1978 film is the second rendition of “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” with the first one being Don Siegel’s, which premiered in 1956. Both films are based on Jack Finney’s novel “The Body Snatchers” from 1955.

On this particular instance, it’s quite unusual for a remake to surpass the original, but in the case of “The Body Snatchers,” Philip Kaufman’s adaptation from 1978 is generally considered a classic among classics. It’s not that Siegel’s version is subpar, but the later one has earned this reputation.
