One of The Biggest Horror Anime Just Released Its First Live-Action Trailer

The genre of horror can sometimes be challenging to execute effectively within the realm of anime. A recent instance demonstrated this difficulty as Junji Ito’s Uzumaki started off strong with its debut episode, yet failed to maintain the excitement generated by the premiere in its subsequent three episodes. As live-action adaptations of anime grow increasingly common within the industry, one prominent example of horror in anime is set to receive a full-length movie treatment. Although not created by Junji Ito, the series Mieruko-Chan possesses spirits that might challenge the reigning king of horror in terms of sheer terror.

The anime titled “Mieruko-Chan” debuted in the year 2018, created by Tomoki Izumi and published by Kadokawa. This series features some of the most spine-tingling ghosts you’ll find in any animated program, but it also offers an amusing touch that may surprise viewers. The central character, Miko Yotsuya, frequently encounters ghosts in her daily life, yet she refuses to acknowledge them. In 2021, the series was adapted into an anime by Studio Passione, spanning twelve episodes. Although a second season hasn’t been announced, a live-action film is set to revisit Miko’s haunted story once more.

The Anime Spirits Are Rising

The real-life adaptation of the popular anime series, Mieruko-Chan, is set to debut in Japan on June 6th this summer. The main cast includes Nanoka Hara as Miko, Rinka Kumada as Hana, Naenao as Yuria, and Koki Yamashita as Akio. Interestingly, the narrator for this live-action version is Sora Amamiya, who voiced the protagonist in Passione’s anime series. Although a North American release hasn’t been announced yet, Japanese live-action adaptations of anime often become available in the West eventually. You can watch the new trailer here.

The State of Anime Horror

In the realm of Junji Ito, no fresh anime adaptations have been announced since the debut of “Uzumaki”, but there’s a chilling lineup coming up in 2025. One of the most intriguing is “Nyaight of The Living Cat”, a twist on the zombie apocalypse theme, where cats replace the living dead. Upcoming series like “The Summer Hikaru Died” and “Hell Teacher Nube” promise to deliver chills and excitement for anime enthusiasts. Returning favorites such as “Mononoke” and “Theatre of Darkness: Yamishibai” serve as a testament to the enduring vitality of the horror genre within the anime world.
