One of the PS5’s Biggest Games Won’t Get a PS5 Pro Upgrade

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment upon hearing that CD Projekt Red has no plans for a PS5 Pro patch for Cyberpunk 2077. I vividly remember the rocky launch of this game back in 2020, and I was among those who patiently waited for the optimized version to run smoothly on my PlayStation 5.

As a devoted PlayStation 5 enthusiast, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the upgrade patches for some third-party games on my console. With the arrival of the PS5 Pro this month, many popular titles swiftly received updates to take advantage of the new hardware. Notable examples include Baldur’s Gate 3, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Alan Wake 2, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Resident Evil 4, and Hogwarts Legacy.

In their latest conversation about Cyberpunk 2077, the developer CD Projekt Red has confirmed that they won’t be releasing an upgrade specifically designed for the PS5 Pro. Since the launch of Phantom Liberty expansion last year, the team has primarily focused on other projects like The Witcher 4 and a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, meaning that work on the original game is essentially completed and they don’t plan to revisit it for enhancing the experience on the newest PlayStation console.

The studio replied, stating that they don’t currently intend to release an upgrade for the PS5 version (equivalent to a PS5 Pro).

It’s widely acknowledged that, given its impressive sales figures, Cyberpunk 2077 could have been one of the most anticipated third-party games to receive an upgrade for the PS5 Pro within the PlayStation library. To date, this sci-fi RPG has sold close to 30 million copies across various platforms like PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. Despite the sales being spread out, there’s a substantial number of players on PS5 who would have eagerly welcomed a PS5 Pro upgrade.

Despite significant improvements since its 2020 launch, Cyberpunk 2077 on PlayStation 5 could still gain significantly more from a PS5 Pro upgrade compared to many other games. Although the current PS5 version of the game runs much smoother than before, it’s clear that there’s substantial potential for further enhancements when comparing it to its PC counterpart. However, it appears that CD Projekt Red has no immediate plans to optimize Cyberpunk 2077 for PS5 Pro unless any future circumstances warrant a change in strategy.
