One of them Days – REVIEW - Price Prediction

In my humble opinion as a movie critic, ‘One of Them Days‘ is remarkably similar to ‘One of Them Movies’ where things spiral out of control for the central duo. Meet Dreux (played by Keke Palmer), a diner waitress with dreams of her own franchise, and her apartment-sharing best friend Alyssa (portrayed by the talented singer SZA), a painter burdened by a wasteful boyfriend who enjoys an indefinite rent-free stay. The pair live hand-to-mouth, paycheck to paycheck, and their financial woes escalate when they receive an eviction notice from their landlord with a deadline of 6 pm – after which, they’ll be out on the streets.

Just as Dreux discovers that Alyssa entrusted her boyfriend to pay the overdue rent, he instead invested it in flammable counterfeit Gucci T-shirts. With the eviction clock ticking, our hapless heroes embark on a frantic search for him. It’s as predictable as Meghan Markle starting a new business – you know things are bound to take a turn for the worse.

The upcoming storyline consists of a sequence of humorous scenarios involving a violent criminal boss, a payday lending firm, a blood donation program, an exclusive pair of sneakers, a job interview, and a vengeful girlfriend who is prone to violence. Most of these events end in the anticipated calamity without any unexpected twists or fresh takes on tired cliches. This screenplay, a first feature film by Syreeta Singleton whose past works have been TV series, leans too heavily on stereotypes, including an unfunny portrayal of the well-endowed black man trope. The core issue lies in enhancing the script with clever jokes and witty one-liners rather than relying on weak setup humor. Unfortunately, the denouement at a blood bank feels nauseating instead of quirky, and the resolutions for each scene are predictable from afar.

However, the dynamic between Keke Palmer and SZA is particularly strong and captivating, with Palmer taking the lead in terms of on-screen charm. It’s worth considering more collaborations from these two talents, especially if they are provided with improved material.
