As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for the unconventional, it’s intriguing to delve into the untold tale of Zack Snyder’s almost-video game endeavor. The revelation that the visionary behind Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was once poised to create a game about owls, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, is as surprising as it is amusing.
An obscure film by director Zack Snyder, renowned for his contentious work in Hollywood, was initially conceived as a potential video game, as stated by a former EA developer. Known for his distinctive cinematic style that features visually stunning, almost painterly shots, and an abundance of slow-motion, Snyder has also been the mastermind behind some of the most debated superhero movies, such as “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” Some speculate that Snyder might excel in video game development given his affinity for action-packed scenes, stoic characters, and more. However, his work has only occasionally explored the realm of gaming.
Previously, things weren’t the same. After the triumph of 300, Zack Snyder established an agreement with EA to develop several video games. This was one of many such deals occurring in Hollywood at that time. Steven Spielberg was also venturing into the gaming industry, working on projects like Boom Blox, Medal of Honor, and a canceled EA game titled LMNO. Snyder was seen as an emerging creative powerhouse, but unfortunately, none of these games were ever released or even announced. However, a recent interview with Glen Schofield, the creator of Dead Space, offers some insight into what one of Zack Snyder’s games might have been, and it may come as a surprise.
During a conversation with DanAllenGaming, Glen Schofield discussed some famous Hollywood figures they interacted with while creating Dead Space. Notable personalities like Wes Craven, James Wan, among others, provided input on the sci-fi horror game in diverse ways. Additionally, Zack Snyder checked out the game during its development as he was proposing another project at EA. Schofield verified that Zack Synder’s project was Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, which became a 2010 animated movie that Snyder directed, making it one of his less prominent works in his filmography.
In a departure from his usual style of creating large, mature films filled with violence, sex, and deep adult themes, director Snyder ventured into making an animated movie intended for children, which was rather unusual. Since then, he hasn’t attempted anything similar, a choice that might not be unexpected given the mixed reception and limited box office success it received. However, it’s intriguing to note that, according to Schofield, Snyder had ideas for turning this project into a game long before it became a film. It seems challenging to create an engaging AAA game centered around owls, and this venture appears to be the least game-like in Snyder’s filmography.
Despite initial plans possibly changing, The Owls of Ga’Hoole did receive a video game adaptation when the movie came out in 2010. Instead of Electronic Arts (EA), Warner Brothers published this game, which could imply that Snyder’s original vision for the game didn’t materialize. It seems likely that another studio was hired to create something similar to the film, as was common practice with Hollywood projects at the time. This might explain why Snyder opted to make an animated movie instead. It’s possible that his concept for the game was turned down, and he adapted his pitch/concept into an animated film. Although the film is based on a book series, it’s intriguing that Snyder initially considered turning it into a video game, rather than a more traditional movie.
Zack Snyder harbors some gaming aspirations, with a Rebel Moon RPG currently under development. Whether this is something that will resonate with fans is yet to be determined, given that the Rebel Moon film series has been met with criticism by many. Time will tell if a video game adaptation will gain traction.
