In its comeback during Spring 2025, One Piece’s anime delved into one of its most captivating backstories yet, leaving many queries about Kuma’s past and transformation into a Pacifista unresolved. Although Bonney had previously witnessed Kuma’s memories prior to the main battle, we are only now discovering the truth behind his history. The chilling Episode 1130 was particularly disturbing due to the Native Hunting Competition that took place in God Valley. The Celestial Dragons were already despised for their past misdeeds, but their actions following the World Government’s grant of unrestricted authority have no bounds.
The World Government grants them unrestricted autonomy, while the Admirals strive tirelessly to shield them, overlooking their heinous deeds. Despite Kuma having escaped the torment of God Valley and no longer living as a captive, his joy in the Sorbet Kingdom is momentary at best. We have yet to uncover the most distressing aspects, and for some viewers, including several esteemed animators of One Piece, there’s a significant chance we will witness an unprecedented level of despair. Kuma’s past is incredibly grim, making it challenging to comprehend the extent of his suffering. It isn’t only the fans who struggle; the animators grapple as well, with one of them yet to delve into his backstory.
I’ve always found it difficult to follow stories that are supposedly heart-wrenching from the beginning. Even with Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear anime, I haven’t managed to finish the original work yet… (Reading The Toppung War took an immense amount of time for me to decide to read it)
Everyone says you’ll cry if you read it, but I can’t seem to get through it…
I feel a sadness that I can’t join the rest on this Big Wave.

Megumi Ishitani Didn’t Even Read Kuma’s Backstory
Megumi Ishitani posted on her account, “I dislike stories with predictable sad endings, which is why I haven’t delved into the original manga or even the Kuma Arc anime. Reading Summit War was also a tough decision due to the same reason – people say it will make them cry. The pain of missing out on experiencing this massive wave is palpable.
In another post, she described her work on the Fan Letter as evoking feelings of being stranded on a war-ravaged battlefield, causing her to express reluctance about revisiting it during the creation process.
Ishitani is well-known as an accomplished animator, particularly recognized for her work on “One Piece”. She started working with the team in 2022 and has made notable contributions to visually captivating episodes, openings, and the highly acclaimed special episode, “One Piece Fan Letter”. This special was released to celebrate the anime’s 25th anniversary and resonated deeply with fans due to its compelling narrative and exceptional visuals.
Even though Ishitani hasn’t contributed to any Egghead episode beyond Episode 1089, she remains a valuable team member, much like any other animator. Recently, as the anime delves into Kuma’s past, Ishitani admitted that she hasn’t read this backstory and shared her struggle in depicting the emotionally taxing Summit War during the Fan Letter episode production, which is considered one of the saddest arcs in the series.
