Toei Animation, renowned for producing hits like One Piece and Dragon Ball, is Japan’s oldest animation studio, with roots tracing back to 1948 when it was first known as Japan Animated Films. Later on, it changed its name to Toei Animation in 1956. This studio holds the distinction of creating the first colored anime feature film, Hakujaden (The Tale of the White Serpent), released in 1958. Despite occasional controversies and criticism, particularly from fans of Dragon Ball regarding marketing issues and delays, as well as One Piece supporters expressing concern over pacing and changes from the manga, Toei Animation remains one of the largest studios in Japan.
This time, the integration of AI into animation is sparking anxiety among social media users, especially those who adore traditional shows. Although some advocate for AI in animation, many fans still prefer the classic, hand-drawn scenes. What makes anime popular worldwide is the artistic talent that shines through each frame. Lately, AI has been rapidly advancing, and many aren’t eager to accept this transformation. Alongside Kodansha, a Japanese publishing firm, Toei, and certain banking institutions have also invested in Preferred Networks, Inc. (PFN), a Japanese tech company specializing in generative AI foundation models and AI solutions.
One Piece Animator Is Also Confused By the Sudden Investment
As stated on the official site of PFN, Kiichiro Yamada, holding a senior position at Toei Animation, advocated for merging traditional anime production methods with advanced technologies. He is convinced that such fusion will boost the growth and advancement of Japan’s anime sector as a whole.
1. The statement quickly spread through social media platforms.
2. Given Toei’s history, it wouldn’t be unexpected for other studios to adopt similar practices in the future.
3. Long hours and difficulty achieving work-life balance are common among animators and mangakas, which led some people to advocate for AI use.
Though it’s understandable for supporters to express their concerns about the current state, Toei Animation has yet to clarify how they plan to implement artificial intelligence within their studio. This establishment is known for housing skilled artists, who are admired for their fervor and commitment to their craft. Several viewers speculate that even animators might be reluctant to utilize AI in creating storyboards.
It appears that I’ve been discussing the AI topic with everyone I know, but it seems we’re all equally puzzled. For now, it feels more like a grandiose, disconnected public relations statement lacking tangible real-world impact for stakeholders.

Amidst the ongoing debate, well-known animator Vincent Chansard from “One Piece,” a key member since the Wano Country Saga, expressed his thoughts: “I’ve been discussing this AI topic with everyone in my network, but it seems we are all equally puzzled. At the moment, it appears to be an exaggerated, disconnected PR statement that merely suggests we are a forward-thinking company, without any tangible changes in real-life production actually taking place.
When someone expressed their worry that Toei might employ AI for One Piece, Vinecent responded, “At present, there’s no need for such concern. However, being a big company, there could be various projects underway, and I don’t have full knowledge of everything happening across all teams. I’m making sure to stay updated.
Although the animator’s statement doesn’t assure that the studio won’t employ AI for storyboarding, since they haven’t been informed yet following the big announcement, there’s no need to be concerned at this moment. The anime is currently focusing on the Egghead Incident Arc and will keep producing captivating episodes.
