One Piece Creator Settles Debate on Whether Strong World Is Canon

As a dedicated fan of One Piece, I have been following the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his Straw Hat Pirates for years. From the classic tales of East Blue to the latest events unfolding in the New World, I have witnessed the evolution of this iconic shonen series.

As a dedicated gamer and fan of Shonen series, I can tell you that sometimes, these captivating stories take a detour from the usual narrative with movies that don’t fit into the main storyline. For instance, in the case of iconic series like Dragon Ball, there are films that aren’t considered part of the continuity, meaning they don’t align with the television show or manga’s primary timeline.

As a devoted fan of One Piece, I’m always thrilled when Oda-sensei interacts with us through the “SBS” (Shonen Jump Super) Q&A sessions. In response to a recent query, he discussed the relationship between the movies and the main series, using “One Piece: Strong World” as an example. He mentioned that while it’s possible to include films in the storyline forcefully, it may not be as cohesive with the overall narrative. Regarding Shiki from “Strong World,” Oda believes that the character is indeed part of the main story from the start. However, since Shiki wasn’t shown to have consumed the “Float Float Fruit” in the manga, he had established a personal rule not to introduce such a power for pirates. Due to the film’s depiction of this ability, Oda now has to incorporate it into the original work – resulting in an unexpected crossover. He jokingly referred to this as a “reverse importation.”

One Piece: Canon Or Non-Canon

The newest film in the One Piece shonen series, titled “One Piece Film: Red,” is an essential addition with a canonical storyline. In collaboration between Toei Animation and Eiichiro Oda, this production presents the untold past of Luffy and a new character, Uta (daughter of Shanks), through original anime episodes. These episodes take place long before the formation of the Straw Hat Pirates.

If you haven’t seen “One Piece: Strong World” yet, you can find it on Netflix and Crunchyroll for streaming. Here’s their take on this canon film featuring the Straw Hat Pirates: Legendary pirate Shiki resurfaces in East Blue with an aim to annihilate the World Government. In response, the Straw Hats are drawn into unfamiliar territory when Nami gets kidnapped.
