The anime adaptation of One Piece took a six-month break in October 2024, coinciding with its 25th anniversary. The studio opted for the longest hiatus ever in the series, not just to catch up with the manga, but also to deliver exceptional animation quality in almost every episode following the Egghead Arc. At that time, One Piece was airing a remastered version of the Fish-Man Island Arc. However, since its return, many fans have expressed dissatisfaction over how Toei Animation is handling Sanji’s characterization. On April 5th and 6th, One Piece will release two episodes consecutively.

The entire episode lives up to expectations, but yet again, Sanji supporters find themselves let down by the studio over two highly debated scenes. Over time, One Piece enthusiasts have expressed concern about underrepresenting Sanji and overemphasizing comedic elements for lengthier episodes. This time around, fans express similar dissatisfaction, questioning if the six-month wait was justified.

One Piece Episode 1123 Changes a Couple of Sanji Scenes
In Chapter 1086, the moment when Straw Hats and their comrades seized York was quite a hit. As mentioned in that post, Toei omitted Sanji from this scene, creating an unsettling gap instead. This might not bother many, but the subsequent scene showing Sanji with heart-eyes fixed on Bonney sparked massive controversy. Although Bonney possesses the power of the Age-Age Fruit and usually appears as an adult, she is canonically only 12 years old. As a result, neither her nor Sanji’s usual heart-eye interactions have been portrayed in the manga.
The humor in Sanji’s character has been a point of contention among fans, with some arguing that it’s outdated and unfunny. Although Sanji’s age isn’t revealed until much later in the storyline, Eiichiro Oda always ensured that their interactions remained appropriate and not inappropriate. However, the non-canonical scenes seem to stray from Oda’s original concept. Yet, many fans are backing the animation studio, asserting that Sanji showing affection is consistent with his character traits.
For more than two decades, Toei Animation has been meticulously crafting the anime series, earning both accolades and criticisms from fans. Apart from the ongoing debate about Sanji’s character, other aspects of the episode are largely uncontested. The opening theme of the show, however, spotlights Bonney and Kuma over the Straw Hats, offering a heart-wrenching glimpse into one of the series’ saddest tales. The initial portion of the Egghead Incident Arc only hinted at the backstory, but it will soon be fully explored in upcoming episodes. Moreover, it’s expected that Episode 1124 will introduce a new ending theme due to the absence of one in the previous episode.
