Of all the enigmas in the series One Piece, the mystery of the Void Century stands out as the most significant one. Not only does it tie into the legend of the hidden treasure, but it also reveals the ominous truth behind the World Government’s rise to power. The show consistently demonstrates the detrimental effects of the World Government’s corruption and tyranny on the world. Given their eagerness to conceal the secrets of the Void Century, it’s evident that it must contain a dark revelation about their origins. The world’s leader, Imu, wields immense power and directly controls the Five Elders.
Despite his confidence, there’s one individual who makes him tread carefully – Joyboy. A significant figure whose end marked the Void Century, his tale ended in sorrow. Being aware of the consequences, Joyboy took care to ensure he wouldn’t meet a similar fate. Though One Piece initially introduces him during the Fish-Man Island Arc, readers uncover more about him later on Egghead Island. Vegapunk’s message offers a brief peek into Joyboy’s past history. Though details are still incomplete, it’s evident that what transpired long ago was heartrendingly tragic. However, fans lament the omission of this poignant aspect from his backstory.
The Burden of Hope and Joyboy’s Regrets in One Piece
In Chapter 1114 of “One Piece,” Dr. Vegapunk discloses that Joyboy was the first pirate ever recorded. Hailing from an advanced ancient kingdom, Joyboy had the unique ability to elongate and retract his body much like Nika, a legendary figure spoken of in Elbaf. Moving forward to Chapter 1115, Vegapunk posits that the century-long conflict, infamously known as the Great War which took place 800 years ago, was triggered by ideological differences. Due to his lack of knowledge regarding the initial cause of the war, Dr. Vegapunk remains uncertain about who holds the moral high ground in his conjectures.
In times long past, a warrior named Joyboy hailed from a grand kingdom. Facing off against combined forces, he stood defiantly before twenty leaders of various nations. Tragically, he fell in battle, signaling the close of the Void Century. Shortly following his demise, most of the world succumbed to the destruction brought about by ancient weapons. Joyboy foresaw the world’s doom if he lost the fight. He bestowed upon future generations the weighty hope he carried and passed away riddled with remorse for breaking his vow and failing to save the world.
The Terrible Fate of the World After Joyboy’s Death
In my perspective, the Great War served as an ominous prelude to the shrouded darkness that ultimately swallowed the world in the realm of One Piece. Following Joyboy’s demise, the remnants of the ancient weapons brought about unparalleled destruction, causing the sea level to surge dramatically up to 200 meters and submerging most of the continents beneath the ocean’s depths. The world they inhabit now is but a minuscule fragment of its former grandeur.
Moreover, the tyranny of the World Government persists for over eight centuries, causing immense suffering through human trafficking, abuse, genocide, wars, and numerous hardships. This long-standing struggle has yet to be truly resolved; it is the responsibility of future generations to bring an end to this conflict.
Lost Bonds and a Broken Promise
In the annals of time, approximately 800 years ago, I’ve come across tales about a Mermaid Princess named Zunesha, who shared a profound bond with Joyboy. To this day, Zunesha carries a heavy burden of regret over an unspecified event that transpired with his companion. It seems his punishment was to roam the oceans forever. The Void Century may hold the key to understanding the crime he committed, though the details remain shrouded in mystery.
As Emet, still mourning the loss of his dear friend Joyboy, carries on living in honor of their bond, he recalls Joyboy’s final request. Before they parted ways, Joyboy had asked Emet to act when the moment was just right. On Egghead Island, Emet employs Joyboy’s unique powers and confronts Gorosei, all in an effort to shield Luffy. Among a select few characters, Emet holds knowledge about the return of Joyboy.
On Fish-Man Island’s ancient carvings, Joy Boy expresses regret to the Mermaid Queen for failing to keep his pledge. The strong connection between them has been subtly suggested in the story of One Piece, a bond made all the more poignant by the challenge Joy Boy faced in honoring that promise. Similar to the trio, there were undoubtedly others close to Joy Boy – his comrades or kin – who may have suffered tragic fates.
Luffy Is the Beacon of Hope and Joyboy’s Successor
In the story of “One Piece,” Joyboy bravely persevered until his final breath, standing strong against the most powerful forces in existence. It’s heart-wrenching to contemplate how his memory was marred by those who took his life. Yet, even in the deepest despair, there is a glimmer of hope. The essence of Joyboy endures, and Luffy, now regarded as the new Sun God, aims to liberate the world from the oppressive rule of the World Government, giving the people the freedom they deserve.
From my perspective as a bystander, it’s fascinating that they both wield the same divine fruit, the Sun God Nika’s manifestation. This power aligns remarkably well with Luffy’s character. Even prior to activating his devil fruit, Luffy has always been a dependable figure, someone who people can rely on. During the Summit War, Mihawk discerned that Luffy’s true strength isn’t just in his devil fruit abilities, but in his knack for rallying others to his cause. Soon, the tale will unfold the epic journey of Joyboy, a legend whose adventure is eagerly anticipated by all. However, given that we are now in the Final Saga of One Piece, the wait for this revelation won’t be prolonged.
