One Piece Remake Exec Explains How They Redesigned the Straw Hats

As a die-hard One Piece fan who has been sailing with Luffy and his crew since its humble beginnings 25 years ago, I must say that the upcoming remake of this iconic anime series by Wit Studio is nothing short of exhilarating! Kyoji Asano, the character designer behind this new venture, seems to have truly immersed himself in Oda-sensei’s world, shutting himself away for two whole months to “become” Oda-sensei. That level of dedication and passion is something only a fellow fanatic like myself could understand!

The latest iteration of “One Piece” is an upcoming anime series being developed by Wit Studio. The designer responsible for the characters in this new version has shared insights into the redesign process for each member of the Straw Hat crew. To mark its 25th anniversary, “One Piece” unveiled a fresh project to adapt Eiichiro Oda’s original manga from scratch. This upcoming anime aims to offer a unique experience distinct from the original, with a new studio and team preparing for its Netflix debut in the near future.

The One Piece will feature Kyoji Asano as the character designer behind the remake, and during a special presentation during One Piece Day 2024 earlier this month, Asano opened up about his process in taking on the new designs for the Straw Hats. First starting with, When I was given the task to create the design, I thought I had to input Oda-sensei’s way of drawing. I was determined to ‘become’ Oda-sensei and shut myself in for two months.” Before eventually deciding on how they would look for the remake.

Asano explained, “For the past two months, I was consumed with the desire to internalize him. That’s why I decided to focus solely on drawing ‘One Piece.’ I secluded myself for this purpose.” He has done something similar with other projects, immersing himself in a room and starting with replicating the artwork. “You simply reproduce the art and let it sink in,” he said. However, they also had to determine which era of Oda’s art style they wanted to recreate for the upcoming remake anime series.

Over the past 25 years of publishing “One Piece,” Oda-sensei’s drawing style has evolved, Asano clarified. When it came to selecting which styles from “One Piece” to use for our adaptation, The One Piece, I believed that I could remember and manage the different styles in my head. There were moments when I questioned if we would be able to commence at all.

The popular series “One Piece” has no confirmed release date or window as of this writing, but it will stream globally on Netflix when it eventually debuts. Netflix hints at their unique interpretation of the classic series by stating, “Brought to you by the acclaimed WIT Studio (SPY x FAMILY, seasons 1-3 of Attack on Titan) in partnership with Shueisha, Fuji Television Network, and Toei Animation Co., ONE PIECE aims to deliver a refreshing yet familiar experience to viewers, leveraging advanced visual technology to reinvent Luffy’s journeys during the cherished East Blue Saga.”
