The anime adaptation of One Piece has surpassed 1,100 episodes so far, while Netflix’s version is currently adapting events from around the 45th installment of the original TV series. Given that new seasons can take years to release, it might be challenging for Netflix’s One Piece to stick closely to the source material throughout its entire run. As such, it could be beneficial to start contemplating when and how Netflix should conclude its adaptation while staying faithful to Eiichiro Oda’s work.
Initially, we should delve into possibilities regarding the conclusion of the epic saga, “One Piece.” So far, creator Eiichiro Oda hasn’t disclosed an exact timeline for when the final chapter will be published. However, he has made it clear that this storyline will be the finale for Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates. Historically, story arcs have lasted for years following their inception, and even with what manga readers and anime enthusiasts have witnessed in the current saga, there’s no indication that it will wrap up any time soon. As the live-action adaptation still has a substantial journey ahead, let’s examine the key aspects yet to be addressed by the Netflix series and discuss strategies for providing a fulfilling ending to Luffy and his crew before the actors reach their eighties, still in these roles.
The Live-Action End
Initially, let’s review some key plotlines that Netflix has yet to address. Since Season 2 won’t encompass the Alabasta arc, it seems likely that this will be the main theme for Season 3. After the desert setting, the story progresses through Skypiea, Water 7, Thriller Bark, Marineford Arc, Fish-Man Island, Dressrosa, Whole Cake Island, Wano Country, and lastly, the Final Saga. These arcs are usually divided into smaller sub-arcs that share a common location, but this gives us a general idea of what each season might explore if the showrunners decide to closely follow the original material.
2023 saw Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements, the creators of the series, expressing hope for an ambitious run of twelve seasons to fully encompass the entire tale of One Piece. Given this number, it’s possible that not all story arcs can be included. Therefore, we may have to strategize on how to condense certain narratives when needed and determine moments when the live-action adaptation can take a breath.
Marineford Might Be The Best Finale
In essence, extending the series to a full twelve seasons might be overly ambitious, even for “One Piece”, given its live-action format. However, we have our doubts about achieving that goal. Instead, it seems more plausible to limit it to six seasons, mirroring the original source material up until the sixth season. This final season could incorporate events from Marineford and beyond, creating one grand finale. This approach would ensure a coherent narrative and prevent the live-action Straw Hats from appearing too aged in their roles.
The Marineford Saga deeply affected the Straw Hat crew, drawing in almost every character onto a single battlefield. With characters from Whole Cake Island, Wano Country, and beyond potentially joining the mix, this arc remains one of the most highly regarded in the series by fans. Given that the live-action adaptation could continue running after the final manga chapter is published, creator Eiichiro Oda might devote his full attention to the live-action series as Executive Producer. So now, let’s ponder over how they might translate Luffy’s Gear Fifth into the live-action universe.
