Netflix keeps generating buzz for its upcoming live-action “One Piece” series, particularly showcasing the brand-new appearance of the live-action character, Chopper. During the 2025 Tudum Livestream, Netflix unveiled a host of new details about all their upcoming shows and movies. The much-awaited revelation about the live-action Chopper from “One Piece” was the most exciting moment for Tudum viewers, as it had been hinted at for quite some time. In this special unveiling, Netflix showcased a lengthy sequence featuring Chopper’s CGI while interacting with the audience. It has been confirmed that American actress Mikaela Hoover will lend her voice to the character of Chopper. Toei Animation, responsible for the “One Piece” anime, recently released a new animated short depicting an animated Chopper encountering his live-action counterpart.
In a unique segment called “Dr. Chopper’s Adventure Checkup,” which usually airs post-episode of One Piece and showcases a miniature version of Chopper, an animated adventure, Carrot teamed up with the live-action Chopper to discuss and offer insights about the recent or upcoming episode. This time, it was a special Adventure Checkup where they both provided commentary.
Anime Chopper Sees Live-Action Chopper for the First Time
Despite serving as the de facto doctor for the Straw Hat Pirates and being capable of concocting wondrous remedies, Chopper, in essence, remains a youthful character who can be easily fooled. Upon witnessing his live-action counterpart, the animated Chopper displays an exaggerated expression of astonishment. Carrot, upon seeing this new version, finds it endearing and repeatedly refers to him as “Garchu,” a term Mink people use that translates to “I love you.” The original Chopper then informs everyone that his live-action self is still residing at Dr. Kureha’s castle, which happens to be the location where Luffy and the Straw Hats initially encountered him.
In the world of anime and manga, we find Chopper, initially just a regular reindeer who underwent a transformation after consuming the Human-Human Fruit, making him a unique hybrid of human and reindeer. His fellow reindeers rejected him due to his altered human-like appearance, but he found refuge with an aspiring doctor named Dr. Hiriluk. Regrettably, Hiriluk’s medical skills were subpar.
In a tragic turn of events, Hiriluk contracted an illness, and Chopper inadvertently administered poison to him, mistaking the skull and crossbones as a symbol of positivity. Eventually, Hiriluk chose to end his life, leaving Chopper under the care of Dr. Kureha, a truly gifted doctor known for her miraculous healing abilities.
In the epic tale of One Piece, Chopper’s origins and history unfold during the Drum Island arc, which is a significant part of the larger Alabasta Saga. This saga served as the first grand adventure in the series, where the Straw Hat pirates embarked on a journey to the desert island of Alabasta, working to safeguard the kingdom from a deceptive rebellion orchestrated by a notorious sea pirate. The Alabasta Saga marked the debut of major story arcs within One Piece along the Grandline. The upcoming live-action adaptation will explore the initial segment of the Alabasta Saga in its second season. Dr. Kureha will be portrayed by Katey Sagal, known for her roles in Married… with Children and Futurama. Meanwhile, Dr. Hiriluk will be brought to life by Mark Harelik, and Wapol, the primary antagonist of the Drum Island Arc, will be played by Rob Colletti. The second season of live-action One Piece is scheduled for release in 2026.
