Many people who enjoy anime thought it was unthinkable for anyone to make a successful live-action version of the Grand Line, given the anime world’s history with live-action adaptations. However, Netflix has shown skeptics otherwise with the debut of the first season of “One Piece,” which showcases the creation of the Straw Hat Pirates during the East Blue Saga. As they film the second season and prepare to take Roronoa Zoro and his crew to places such as Drum Island and Little Garden, fans eagerly await more adventures on the high seas.
Mackenyu, the actor behind Roronoa Zoro, isn’t new to making anime series leap from the screen into reality. He’s starred in numerous live-action adaptations such as Rurouni Kenshin, Fullmetal Alchemist, Knights of The Zodiac, Tokyo Ghoul, and even JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable. His portrayal of Zoro seems to be his best work yet, as many anime enthusiasts acknowledge that he’s been pouring his heart into the role. Recently, Mackenyu has been teasing the intense action we can expect in season 2, which aligns with the series likely sticking to the storyline from its original source material. In the upcoming battles against Baroqueworks, the live-action Roronoa Zoro will have ample opportunities to showcase his sword skills.
Zoro Forever
In the previous year, Mackenyu participated in “Comic Con Brussels,” using the opportunity to discus his role within the Grand Line. When a fan questioned if he aimed to portray any other renowned anime characters, the real-life Zoro replied that he would need to complete “One Piece” first. Expressing hope that the Netflix series mirrors the manga and anime adaptation, Mackenyu stated, “There are approximately 50 more seasons ahead… so when I reach 70, I’ll retire as Zoro.
Currently, the anime adaptation of One Piece boasts more than a thousand episodes that trace the journey of the Straw Hat crew since its debut in the late 90s. It’s clear that the upcoming Netflix series will require considerable time to fully capture Monkey D. Luffy’s tale, and there’s uncertainty whether it can accurately depict key events such as Egghead Island and Luffy mastering Gear Fifth. Fingers crossed that the cast portraying the Straw Hats will see their dreams fulfilled, and we’ll enjoy a long-running Netflix live-action series for many decades to come.
Live-Action Anime Adaptations’ Rise To Power
One Piece’s successful foray into live-action has opened up a new wave of anime projects, including live-action versions of Naruto, One-Punch Man, Voltron, Mobile Suit: Gundam, and My Hero Academia on Netflix. Here’s hoping these upcoming productions will match the success of Netflix’s series and that the trend of live-action anime adaptations continues to grow.
