One-Punch Man Creator Wants YOU!

Hey there, budding manga artists! Exciting news! The Shueisha Young Manga Debut Award was launched on May 15th of this year! As a significant manga award, this presents an opportunity for all you talented newcomers to gain industry-wide recognition, including some renowned figures within the field. The Shueisha Young Manga Debut Award 2025 aims to celebrate 40 years of Weekly Young Jump, with collaborations among Weekly Young Jump, Tonari no Young Jump, Ultra Jump, and Grand Jump and their editorial departments.

The Shueisha Young Manga Newcomer Award, starting from this year, will take over as the successor to Weekly Young Jump’s 100 Million Yen 40 Manga Award, originally launched during their 2019 40th anniversary and their upcoming 2024 45th magazine anniversary. This award aims to recognize, applaud, promote, and uncover budding mangaka talents in the seinen manga genre who are yet to make a significant impact. With a vast pool of untapped talent out there, this award is poised for a bright future as it continues to celebrate and nurture the young, promising creators who will shape the future of manga.

How Does the Competition Work?

For the Shueisha Young Manga Newcomer Award 2025, as opposed to the 45 categories of the Weekly YJ 45th Anniversary Young Manga Newcomer Award in 2024, there will only be 10 categories for evaluation. The submissions for manga entries will be judged based on these simplified categories, as reported by Mantan.

  • Battle/Action
  • Sports
  • Romance/Romantic Comedy
  • Gag/Comedy
  • Character
  • Storyboard
  • No Genre
  • Tonari no Young Jump Series
  • Grand Jump Series
  • Ultra Jump Series

The final judgement for this competition will be conducted by editorial teams from various Shueisha young adult manga magazines, including Weekly Young Jump (home to Tokyo Ghoul, Elfen Lied, Himouto! Umaru-chan), Tonari no Young Jump (One-Punch Man), Ultra Jump (RWBY, Jojo’s, Steins;Gate), and Grand Jump (Bartender: Edenhall, DRCL). Notably, the final judges will consist of renowned mangaka themselves, such as Aka Akasaka (famous for Kaguya-sama: Love Is War and Oshi no Ko), ONE (creator of One-Punch Man and Mob Psycho 100), Yasuhisa Hara (behind Kingdom), Satoru Noda (author of Dogsred and Golden Kamuy), Toshio Sako (creator of Usogui and Batuque), and many others.

Indeed, the best mangaka artists and their works will be recognized with various awards based on their rankings. The first place winner will receive a grand prize of 5 million yen, followed by the second place winner getting 2.5 million yen, and a judges’ special award recipient receiving 1 million yen. Each category will also have its own awards: the Grand Prize winner gets 500,000 yen, the runner-up receives 300,000 yen, and the special award honoree takes home 100,000 yen.

Starting from May 15th, we’ll begin accepting applications. It doesn’t matter how many pages your submission is, but it must be written in Japanese. There are no other specific requirements to meet eligibility. The deadline for submissions is September 30th, and Shueisha will announce the results in January 2026. Good luck to all budding mangakas, and thank you for your dedication! Regardless of the outcome, may your perseverance and aspirations lead to a future where you can create manga that brings joy to many!
