One simple feature would greatly improve Steam Deck 2, ROG Ally 2, and other next-gen PC gaming handhelds for everyone

Similar to numerous others, I’m eagerly anticipating substantial enhancements in terms of performance and screen quality for the next iterations of the Steam Deck 2, ROG Ally 2, and future gaming portable devices.

Furthermore, I’d like these upcoming gadgets to include an easy-to-miss physical characteristic that is currently absent in the Steam Deck, ASUS ROG Ally, Ally X, MSI Claw 8 AI+, Legion Go S, and other mainstream PC handheld devices.

None of these portable gaming devices have kickstands.

As a passionate gamer, I’ve discovered that incorporating a simple yet impactful design feature transforms my handheld gaming devices into more engaging entertainment tools. Pairing this device with the perfect accessory, such as a kickstand, makes it a versatile all-in-one solution for my multimedia needs.

Do gaming handhelds NEED kickstands?

Handheld gaming devices aren’t strictly required to have kickstands, but including one significantly enhances the device’s adaptability and ease of use without needing hands.

In a more conversational style, one could argue that while devices like the Nintendo Switch 2, Legion Go, or the upcoming Legion Go 2, which have detachable controllers, may seem to require a kickstand due to their design, this perspective is somewhat narrow-minded.

You don’t need to physically grip it; instead, you can link an Xbox controller and enjoy your portable devices in a flat position (tabletop mode), or utilize the handheld device more like a tablet for multitasking entertainment purposes.

Instead of propping handheld devices on improvised supports, it offers more stability and convenience to have a built-in kickstand.

Indeed, there are protective handheld covers that come with kickstands as well, like the dBrand Killswitch priced at $49.95. While these add-ons can be useful, it would be more convenient if most handheld devices came equipped with a built-in stand, eliminating the need to purchase an additional accessory for this purpose.

Going hands-free turns gaming handhelds into all-around entertainment devices

Elevating these gadgets with kickstands turns them into versatile tools for both work and play, not just gaming devices.

When it comes to gaming, I usually rely on the Steam Deck and ROG Ally X. However, when I need something for entertainment or help, I tend to reach for the Lenovo Legion Go, thanks to its spacious screen and built-in kickstand.

In a cozy setting, I often utilize the Legion Go device to watch movies with my cat, browse cooking recipes as I prepare meals, learn from YouTube tutorials during DIY home improvement tasks, and engage in numerous other activities.

Instead, it’s more convenient not to have to set up a homemade stand for the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, or my smartphone, as they might accidentally tip over.

Additionally, viewing content on the larger screen of the Legion Go offers a clearer view of more intricate details compared to what I can see on my compact smartphone screen, and this freedom allows me to continue using my mobile device simultaneously.

Consequently, a kickstand significantly enhances the convenience of a handheld device, making it suitable for activities beyond just gaming.

Kickstands and keyboards turn handhelds into laptop alternatives

Handheld devices for PC gaming could serve as viable alternatives to laptops for professional, academic, or personal tasks, given that they can be equipped with a mouse and keyboard.

On occasion, during my journeys, I’ve composed articles directly on my Legion Go laptop (standing securely on its kickstand). By the way, I’m quite fond of the wireless keyboard I purchased from Amazon, as it eliminates the need for a mouse and its collapsible design is perfect for traveling.

But is it practical to just use a gaming handheld as your main computer? It definitely can be.

There are individuals who have chosen to abandon their regular laptops, opting instead to satisfy all their computing requirements with just a portable gaming device.

One individual shared with me that they treat their portable gaming device as a mobile laptop, utilizing it outside the house. Upon returning home, they connect it to a docking station, transforming it into a more conventional desktop setup. After completing work, they disconnect the handheld and employ it for playing their preferred games. It performs all computer duties.

Despite being just a minor aspect of its overall design, a kickstand significantly enhances the portable functionality of a gaming handheld by offering greater versatility when used away from home.

I hope we see more kickstands on future handhelds

To put it simply, incorporating a kickstand on gaming handhelds might seem like a minor feature, but it significantly enhances their versatility, transforming a device primarily designed for gaming into a multi-purpose computing tool as well.

It would be beneficial to have a built-in stand feature on both my ROG Ally and Steam Deck devices, as this would allow me to utilize them in various settings without the need for extra purchases. While accessories with kickstands are available, it’s always nicer when the necessary features are integrated without requiring additional spending.
