As I delve into the captivating tale of Hilarie Burton and her journey beyond One Tree Hill, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of admiration for this remarkable woman. Her life, much like a well-crafted novel, is filled with poignant moments that have shaped her into the strong, resilient individual she is today.
Bethany Joy Lenz is sharing her perspective.
In light of whispers suggesting a dispute between the 43-year-old and another “One Tree Hill” cast member, Hilarie Burton, Lenz offered some clarity on their current relationship.
Previously known child actors teamed up to host the “Drama Queens” podcast, sharing the spotlight with another cast member from their shared past show “One Tree Hill“, Sophia Bush. However, whispers of disagreements have been circulating between Lenz and Burton as of late.
Lenz expressed his affection for Hilarie during the October 16th episode of Call Her Daddy. He’s always had this feeling and will continue to do so, without any reservations. There have been some strange misconceptions he hopes they can clarify someday, but he adores her deeply.
Nevertheless, she didn’t always enjoy a harmonious bond with her co-stars. Lenz, who openly discusses her past involvement in a cult during her 20s and further explores this topic in her upcoming book titled “Dinner for Vampires: Life on a Cult TV Show” (coincidentally also in an actual cult!), acknowledged that she found it challenging to build rapport with Sophia Bush throughout the series’ nine-season duration.
In Lenz’s own words, “We seemed to share a similar outlook on life, yet our viewpoints were diametrically opposed. The conclusions we reached about life, God, and such matters differed greatly. At that moment in time, there was little room for understanding each other. She would have been more open to hearing my perspective and understanding me than I was to listening to hers at the time.
In contrast, even though they portrayed friends on-screen (Lenz as Haley James Scott and Bush as Brook Davis), their off-screen relationship differed significantly.
She confessed, “We’re pretending to have a strong bond, but I’m unsure about the ways to truly bond with each other.” It’s challenging, she added.
Regarding if the ex-co-stars discussed their challenges from filming on their podcast, Drama Queens, Lenz acknowledged that there’s still progress to be made in their journey.
She mentioned, “To some extent, but not as fully as I had hoped,” she shared. On our podcast, Drama Queens, we certainly discussed our past experiences, the challenges, the nostalgia, and the feelings of unraveling mysteries from back then. Yes, we did. However, it’s an ongoing journey. There are still many individuals in my life whom I… oh, the weight of shame can be quite heavy.
Although she’s been listening to the show (which originally aired from 2003 to 2012) as a podcast, she’s not yet prepared to take on the role of Haley James Scott again. Consequently, regarding the potential Netflix continuation that’s currently being developed, she stated, “It’s premature to discuss any of that at this stage.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve noticed some intriguing developments between the dynamic duo of Lenz and Burton this year. It all started when fans picked up on the fact that they were no longer connected on social media platforms. To add to the mystery, Burton decided to part ways with the podcast once we concluded our coverage of season six. Interestingly enough, Robert Buckley, who portrayed Clay Evans during the show’s final chapters, found himself teaming up with Lenz and Burton after that. It’ll be fascinating to see where these moves lead in the future!
And the White Collar alum chalked the decision to her time simply running its course.
As we wrap up my exclusive backstage journey with the show, I found myself pondering about my role and how to maintain the significance of our storytelling. As we move forward from seasons 7 to 9, it became crucial to introduce a fresh queen who could step into my shoes and continue the legacy.
For more shocking secrets from the One Tree Hill cast, read on.
Initially, the project that was penned by writer Mark Schwahn was conceived as a film titled “Ravens”. It took Warner Bros. Television executives a period of four years to persuade him to transform this movie into a television series instead.
2. The show’s title originated from the U2 song “One Tree Hill,” taken from their album “Joshua Tree.” Each episode of the series was titled after a song by various artists, including Dashboard Confessional and R.E.M.
3. Following his role as Ryan on The O.C., Chad Michael Murray declined the offer to star as Lucas, the complex character who is both a writer and basketball player. Initially, producers imagined him playing Nathan due to his bad-boy roles in Gilmore Girls and Dawson’s Creek, but after his mother left when he was young, Murray identified with Lucas and advocated for the part.
4. Bethany Joy Lenz tried out for both Haley and Brooke characters, but she wasn’t keen on portraying Brooke, confessing that she read them similarly as she did Haley. In the end, Lenz was cast as a series regular. To distinguish herself from Hilarie Burton’s character Peyton, she dyed her natural blond hair dark and straightened her curls.
17-year-old James Lafferty, with his extensive basketball background, recognized that he faced a challenge to secure the role of Nathan given his limited acting experience. In his own words from a behind-the-scenes interview, “I don’t believe I was their first choice,” indicating that he had to audition for the part on multiple occasions, ultimately six times.
It’s not incorrect to say that he was right. As executive producer Joe Davola put it, “James was an underdog when he applied for the role during casting.
6. Sophia Bush initially didn’t feature in the first episode, but she joined the cast as Brooke in the second one and continued to appear regularly, even taking on directorial duties for three episodes.
7. One year following their initial meeting on set, Murray and Bush got engaged in 2004, subsequently marrying shortly thereafter. However, just five months into their marriage, they announced their separation. In 2018, Bush shared insights about working with her former spouse during an episode of Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast.
In his words, there wasn’t an opportunity for personal introspection following the breakup, and he found the actions of the producers to be disrespectful towards both him and Murray.
She went on to say, “They frequently aired advertisements about it, and it was truly distressing. They exploited people’s private lives, not just mine and my ex, but also other actors on the show who shared personal details when they formed close relationships. They would use these deeply personal matters in their storylines, which was unacceptable.
8. Later in 2008, Bush began dating Lafferty, but eventually found herself romantically involved with Austin Nichols, who portrayed her on-screen spouse Julian in OTH. The relationship ended in 2012, coincidentally the same year the show concluded.
In the later seasons, Lisa Goldstein, who portrayed Millie, tied the knot with Brendan Kirsch, the show’s basketball coordinator, in the year 2011.
10. In a recent episode of their podcast “Drama Queens,” which she co-hosts with Bush and Lenz, Burton disclosed that her husband, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, nearly became her co-star on “OTH.
She mentioned that when she first met Jeff, he casually shared, “I tried out for that production,” implying he auditioned for the part. Later on, it turned out that role of Keith, who served as Lucas’ mentor figure, had been given to Craig Sheffer. Jeff seemed surprised when he found out about this, expressing something along the lines of, “Hold on, what?
11. Danneel Ackles, who is married to Jensen Ackles, would be the one to introduce Burton and Morgan. This connection between them stemmed from the fact that Jensen Ackles developed a strong bond with Morgan after he played his father in the series Supernatural.
12. In a stunning public letter dated November 2017, 18 individuals involved in the production team made serious allegations of sexual misconduct against Schwahn, suggesting a troubling environment that pervaded on set.
In the 2020 memoir titled “The Rural Diaries: Love, Livestock, and Big Life Lessons Down on Mischief Farm,” Burton penned about Schwahn, “In my unique tale, there was a wicked character who drove female actors against each other, coerced us into explicit scenes that always left me feeling unwell and ashamed, encouraged young actresses to flaunt their assets, made physical advances on all of us, and forced himself upon me, subjecting me to unwanted kisses.” (First person perspective as an obsessed fan)
13. Moreover, Bush discussed her personal experiences during a June 2021 interview on the “Chicks in the Office” podcast, alleging that she and some of her unnamed “One Tree Hill” cast members were subjected to control and manipulation by certain adults behind the scenes without specifying who they were.
According to Bush, there were adults whom we considered trustworthy, but in hindsight, they exhibited controlling and manipulative behavior. They didn’t want us to be close because they feared we would unite and demand more resources, which was something we were unaware of at the time. It feels strange now when looking back on it.
14. Murray and Burton left the show after its sixth season in 2009. However, Burton hinted at her eventual exit in a much earlier stage, as she shared in her memoirs.
Following the tragic loss of her close companion Scott Kirkpatrick during service in Iraq in the year 2007’s summer, she recounted that her life underwent a significant change. His demise served as a jolt, helping her realign her “priorities and aspirations.
She shared that for the past few years, she had been wandering without finding her true place, yet yearned for something more. Specifically, she longed for a family and a home where she could find solace, a space to dream, take risks, learn from failures, and strive again. She desired a life filled with purposeful moments, each one carefully chosen – waking up, working, eating, and resting intentionally. With this in mind, she decided to leave her old life behind, started writing a novel, and purchased a one-way ticket to Paris.
15. At that moment, Schwahn informed a gathering of fans in Paris that their departures were due to contract issues, as reported by The Los Angeles Times. He expressed hope that they might return, saying, “I believe they’ve been offered attractive opportunities. I can only hope they choose to come back.” However, he acknowledged that if they don’t, it’s always a possibility…[the show] has managed to navigate some of the riskier decisions we’ve made.
In addition to his statements, Murray communicated to the show’s audience through a video message, stating, “They won’t be bringing me back next season…as they aim to cut costs. I suggest you start blogging and expressing your discontent.” However, unlike Burton, Murray did make an appearance during the final season.
16. In an audacious decision, the show One Tree Hill leaped forward in time during its sixth season, opting to skip over the college years and instead rejoin the characters as fully-grown adults.
In an interview with TopMob News back in 2015, Lafferty stated that when you observe shows similar to ours and try to transition the characters from high school into their next life phase, it often feels forced and doesn’t flow smoothly.
17. Country artist Jana Kramer shared on her podcast “Whine Down” that one anonymous cast member from the TV show OTH created a challenging environment during its last three seasons, claiming that this individual prevented her from being friendly with Hilarie Burton Leffler (Lafferty).
In a 2021 episode, she explained that during her time on the show, there were some unspoken rules like, “You can’t interact with this individual if you’re friends with someone else,” which made it challenging for her to get close to James due to specific circumstances on set at that time.
2010 saw actor Antwon Tanner, known for his role as Antwon “Skills” Taylor, being sentenced to a three-month prison term due to his involvement in a scheme to illegally sell stolen Social Security Numbers across state borders. He admitted guilt after being caught in an undercover operation trying to sell fake Social Security numbers (16 of them) and three counterfeit cards in 2009.
