Only Murders in the Building Star Confirms They Aren't Returning for Season 4

As a dedicated fan who has followed the twists and turns of Only Murders in the Building since its inception, I must admit that the news of Jesse Williams’ departure from the series leaves me feeling a tad disheartened. The chemistry between his character Tobert and Selena Gomez’s Mabel was undeniable, and their dynamic added an exciting layer to the mystery-filled narrative.

In the upcoming Season 4 of “Only Murders in the Building,” an impressive array of well-known actors are set to join the show. However, one actor from Season 3, Jesse Williams, known for his role on “Grey’s Anatomy,” will not reprise his character, Tobias (Tobert), who was a significant love interest for Selena Gomez’s Mabel in the previous season. Despite speculation that there might be more story to explore with this character, it appears that he has chosen not to return.

In a recent chat, Williams was queried about rejoining ‘Only Murders in the Building’ for its fourth season. However, he clarified that he is no longer part of the series, effectively ruling out any potential return for his character.

Although Williams won’t be reprising his role for the upcoming “Only Murders” season, there are several notable newcomers this time. The main cast of Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short will be joined by Melissa McCarthy, Molly Shannon, Zach Galifianakis, Eva Longoria, Kumail Nanjiani, and Eugene Levy in the new series.

Season 4 of Only Murders in the Building hits Hulu on August 27th.

Only Murders in the Building Season 4 (SPOILERS AHEAD)

The closing moments of “Only Murders” Season 3 hint at a new mystery, as beloved guest character Sazz (portrayed by Jane Lynch) meets her demise in Charles’ apartment. Co-creator John Hoffman shared insights on this recent fatality with TVLine.

One reason for our decision was the novelty; we hadn’t previously portrayed a character as beloved as our murder victim. Having a personal connection with the story often adds depth, stirs emotions, and makes the narrative unique. However, there were also elements we hadn’t explored within this setup yet, which I found intriguing. This combination of the personal, the emotional, and the unexpected will resonate with the audience, although they might not appreciate it!

“He went on, feeling a bit more confident after presenting his idea to Jane Lynch, who clearly appreciated it. She excitedly replied, ‘I adore it!’ Since she’s familiar with the show and understands our focus on victims, he’s eager to delve deeper into this with Sazz. The character Jane has crafted is truly brilliant. I’m thrilled to explore more about her past and the dynamics between us as we work together to solve our cases, but I can’t reveal too many details yet.”
