OpenAI could raise the subscription price for its advanced AI models based on the value delivered

As a seasoned analyst with over two decades of experience in the tech industry, I find myself both intrigued and cautious regarding OpenAI’s pricing strategy for its advanced AI models. While it is undeniable that the value these systems provide to businesses can be substantial, charging $2,000 per month seems a tad excessive – even for an assistant as capable as a Ph.D.-level one!

In September, there was a report suggesting that OpenAI might increase the subscription fees for its advanced AI models. This controversial report hinted at potential increases reaching $2,000 per month, which has sparked criticism from users as it seems unreasonable unless these models are capable of artificial general intelligence (AGI), since this price point is typically set for an employee’s salary.

It appears that OpenAI’s Chief Financial Officer, Sarah Friar, has supported the claims in a Bloomberg report. The report suggests that Friar hinted at potentially increasing the monthly subscription fee for their advanced AI models aimed at business users. This increase would supposedly align with the significant value these systems provide to companies.

The executive hinted that the company might consider charging approximately $2,000 monthly for their AI models when queried.

I prefer an open approach to life, especially if it means having a highly skilled assistant akin to a PhD level, who can aid me in all my endeavors and facilitate smooth navigation through the world.

More money, more value

OpenAI’s latest move suggests that they might be shifting towards charging higher fees for AI services, such as ChatGPT. As part of their 12-day holiday event, they unveiled a new premium subscription called ChatGPT Pro, priced at $200 per month. This announcement has sparked a range of reactions, with many users finding the cost too high, while others are willing to pay if the service performs well.

Regarding the new subscription plan, called ChatGPT Pro, priced at $200 per month, it offers unlimited access to OpenAI models such as o1, GPT-4o, and Advanced Voice mode. It’s important to note that the introduction of ChatGPT Pro does not mean that support for the existing ChatGPT Plus will be discontinued. Instead, both subscriptions will coexist, with ChatGPT Plus users also having access to the o1 model. The main difference between the two is that ChatGPT Pro users will have a higher security clearance and the ability to fully utilize the model’s capabilities, enabling it to tackle complex problems more effectively by “working harder on the most challenging issues.

It appears that OpenAI could potentially increase the cost for its sophisticated AI models, as suggested by remarks made by their Chief Financial Officer, Friar.

“What alternative methods might you have considered for financing it? Would additional staff be required in that case? Considering the potential replacement costs, how should we establish a reasonable pricing for this?

OpenAI’s new pricing strategy for its advanced AI models may increase income from their services, enabling them to cover the high expenses associated with constructing complex, state-of-the-art systems. This comes at a critical time as rumors of bankruptcy swirl around the company behind ChatGPT, potentially leaving them in a challenging position over the next year, with estimates suggesting a $5 billion deficit.

To avoid bankruptcy, the AI company secured a massive $6.6 billion investment from significant backers such as Microsoft, NVIDIA, Thrive Capital, SoftBank, among others. Yet, OpenAI confronts tougher hurdles, like the necessity to transition into a profit-oriented organization or risk returning the funds provided by investors. This action could potentially expose it to external manipulation and potential hostile acquisitions.
