OpenAI will make you pay to search your ChatGPT history, but only for a while

What you need to know

  • ChatGPT now supports searching through chat history.
  • The new feature is available now for subscribers with a ChatGPT Plus or Teams account.
  • Users of the free version of ChatGPT will be able to search their chat history in the near future.

As a tech enthusiast with years of experience under my belt, I must say that the latest update from ChatGPT is nothing short of exciting! Being able to search through my chat history with this AI tool is going to be a game-changer for me and many others like me who use it regularly.

The newest addition to ChatGPT allows you to easily search for any question you’ve asked or prompt you’ve provided the AI tool. This feature is now available for paid subscribers, but it’s also on its way for free users soon.

This week, the official OpenAI account on X (previously Twitter) announced some news and provided a sneak peek of its functionality in operation. When the search feature becomes available to you, a magnifying glass symbol will appear next to the compose icon at the top of ChatGPT on the web.

On October 29, 2024, users of ChatGPT Plus and Teams got the ability to utilize the search function. In the upcoming week, Enterprise and Edu users will also be granted this feature. Those currently using the free version of ChatGPT can expect to have search functionality within the next month. Initially, access to this new feature is being restricted by a $20-per-month subscription for a brief period of time.

Staying ahead

Despite being just one among several similar tools, ChatGPT has managed to garner significant user interest and media coverage. OpenAI, the company behind it, has secured massive financial backing from industry heavyweights like Microsoft and NVIDIA, totaling billions of dollars. However, in their pursuit of AI supremacy and the development of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), OpenAI has reportedly faced significant financial losses amounting to billions of dollars.

To stay ahead of other AI tools, it’s crucial for ChatGPT to get frequent updates. The launch of GPT-4 brought about an unprecedented surge in revenue for OpenAI. Introducing SearchGPT could potentially help OpenAI compete with Google, but improving ChatGPT remains vital. Functionality such as searching through your ChatGPT history is a welcome improvement, though I believe it should have been introduced earlier.
