What you need to know
- OpenAI recently unveiled next-gen AI models with advanced reasoning capabilities across science, math, and coding, including OpenAI o1 and o1-mini.
- The new models are shipping exclusively to ChatGPT Plus and Teams users, meaning you’ll need a paid subscription to gain access, although their capabilities are fairly limited.
- OpenAI admits the models will need “an extra minute” to respond to queries since it processes prompts step-by-step before responding.
As an experienced observer with a keen interest in technology and AI, I must say the unveiling of OpenAI’s next-gen models, OpenAI o1 and o1-mini, has piqued my curiosity. The advancements in reasoning capabilities across various domains such as science, coding, and math, are undoubtedly impressive, but they seem to be a stepping stone towards achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
OpenAI has introduced its latest line of cutting-edge AI models, named OpenAI o1 and o1-mini. As you can imagine, these are the highly anticipated versions of the Strawberry AI model, boasting enhanced reasoning abilities. According to the creator of ChatGPT, “These models have the capability to tackle intricate tasks and solve more challenging problems in areas like science, programming, and mathematics compared to their predecessors.
Introducing a sneak peek at OpenAI o1 – our latest line of AI models that prioritize thoughtful responses over speedy ones. These advanced models excel in tackling intricate tasks across various fields such as science, programming, and mathematics, outperforming previous versions. OpenAI introduced two latest AI systems: the preliminary version of OpenAI o1 and a more compact model called OpenAI o1-mini. As its name implies, the mini version is smaller and costs 80% less than the preview version. The company asserts that these cutting-edge AI models outperform typical generative AI models in terms of performance.
According to the creator of ChatGPT, OpenAI’s AI models don’t handle complex prompts all at once. Instead, they break down the prompt into smaller steps, much like a human would. This method, which is also referred to as reinforcement learning, allows the AI to explore multiple solutions to find the optimal one for the given issue. However, it’s important to note that while this approach may reduce the likelihood of generating incorrect responses or spreading misinformation, it doesn’t guarantee it entirely. The effectiveness will be determined through real-world use.
However, the new next-gen AI models take longer to generate responses since they require “an extra moment to think.” Based on the shared benchmarks, OpenAI o1 outperforms most available AI models, including the ‘magical’ GPT-4o.
As a tech enthusiast, I was thrilled to learn that OpenAI’s model, version 1 (o1), surpassed GPT-4 in the International Mathematics Olympiad qualifying exam. While GPT-4 scored a mere 13%, OpenAI o1 impressively achieved an 83% score. Moreover, OpenAI’s Chief Technology Officer, Mira Murati, hinted that their latest AI models offer a peek into their thought process, making it simpler for researchers to examine and understand how these models tackle tasks effectively.
In other words, the advanced AI models are only available for ChatGPT Plus and Team users in a trial phase, which means you’ll require a paid subscription to utilize the primary models. It’s important to mention that OpenAI o1 will have a weekly message limit of 30, whereas the smaller version allows up to 50.
Absolutely, OpenAI intends to enhance the functionality of their models in the near future. The current limitations are primarily due to the substantial operational expenses involved. It’s important to note that OpenAI shells out approximately $700,000 daily just to keep ChatGPT functioning. Additionally, OpenAI is anticipated to make its new model, o1-mini, available to users who don’t have access to ChatGPT yet, but with a lower usage limit compared to GPT-4.
OpenAI 01 is not AGI, but the stepping stone
After the unexpected debut of OpenAI’s latest AI models featuring enhanced reasoning skills, some users have expressed apprehension and debated if this launch signifies Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), a sophisticated form of artificial intelligence.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, affirmed that the latest models do not signify the pinnacle of the AI transformation – Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Altman has been open about his aspirations for AGI, and he’s acknowledged that this is a significant milestone that the company is actively pursuing. However, a former researcher at OpenAI suggests that the company might be close to attaining this milestone; they are not yet prepared to deal with “all the responsibilities that come along with it.
Did we just get AGI today?September 12, 2024
However, the raised concerns are valid. Multiple reports, including one from an OpenAI insider, revealed a 70% probability AI could potentially lead to the end of humanity, according to p(doom).
I find myself witnessing Elon Musk’s assertion that we stand on the precipice of a monumental technological leap with artificial intelligence. However, by 2025, it seems our existing electrical infrastructure may not be sufficient to fuel this progress. Furthermore, there’s a looming concern about AI displacing human jobs, potentially transforming work into an enjoyable pastime rather than a necessity.
